PS3 Sales

While the PS3's performance has been hilariously dire so
far, I really hope it ultimately does well. What would be
good about Sony failing, and Microsoft dominating? Nothing,
really. There's a fat chance a newcomer would be able to
have an impact, either. Sony is needed to keep this
generation in a healthy state of competition.

How has selling out of every available unit been
'hilariously dire' performance? The sales volumes have
nothing to do with a lack of demand.

Perhaps I was wrong in the OP, but I've in a number of
forums (including Edge online) about the PS3's dismal
performance so far.

I haven't gotten bored enought with my DS to go out and buy
another console.

I thought everyone waits like 2 years and price drops to
about 1/4 of the original, then they start selling like
hotcakes. Unless you're Nintendo - where that shit is cheap
as soon as it hits the shelves. Nintendo4lyfe

you can get both a wii and an xbox 360 for the price of a
bloody ps3

The 360 is rollin' and the other two systems have one good
exclusive game each so I haven't splurged on them yet. The
PS3's library is as slow to grow as the PS2's was, but this
time Sony doesn't have the benefit of the doubt and they're
gonna suffer for it. There's a ton of great games coming out
for it but I doubt they'll catch M$ in US sales or overall
library swellness.

"How has selling out of every available unit been

nothing to do with a lack of demand."

It's easy to sell every unit when you cut your production to
1/10th demand. The claimed production "problems", causing a
limited initial run. I'm sure it was more a marketing
gimick...

Not to mention the demand is far less than the XBOX360
demand; which had a better launch, and likely for the future
much better titles (due to many japanese game studios
deciding not to develop/port games for the PS3 because they
think the price is too high for the console, resulting in
fewer console sales, and even fewer game sales). The PS3
actually sold for $100 less in Japan due to this fact.

There's always the rumour of Macintosh coming out with a
console... iGame.. yay! (not.)

Neither xbox nor xbox360 has in any way outdone respectively
ps2 or ps3 in game quality.. not in existing, nor in
upcoming games.

Hell, the metal gear solid series alone outweighs any and
all of xbox' games, and add to that the silent hill series
and the final fantasy series, and you've got a winner.

The only "next-gen" console I've tried properly yet is the
Wii, and.. well, I had high hopes, actually, but I was
thoroughly let down. The control system sucks (inaccurate
to the max) and, for all the nice words about
"innovativeness" and such, there seem to be surprisingly few
actually innovative games. I've tried a few minutes
on a 360 (so not properly), but I wasn't particularly
impressed with the graphics. However, I don't really believe
I'll be going "WOW!" at the ps3 graphics either: it all
looks the same now, except for Wii which just looks crap.

The PS2 has hands down the best library. But the Xbox had
tons of great exclusives and was a strong foundation for the
360. Ninja Gaiden was better than any comparable game for
PS2, Sega put out a shitload of cool niche games that never
appeared on the PS2 (Panzer Dragoon Orta, Otogi, Shenmue,
Jetset Radio Future, etc), the 3rd party games were always
better on Xbox (the PS2 version of Max Payne is pathetic
while the Xbox version wails), and the Xbox got a lot of PC
ports that never appeared on the PS2. Thief 3 being my
second favorite game of the gen, I had to play it on Xbox
because it ran like shit on my PC. Rallisport Challenge 2>
any PS2 racer.

And the thing is, a lot of the exclusives that gave the PS2
the advantage over the Xbox are no longer exclusives. Silent
Hill hasn't been an exclusive in years, I have The Room for
original Xbox, and SH5 will be on 360. GTA3 is the game that
got PS2 out of its initial funk, but the 360 is getting GTA4
at the same time, there goes that trump card.

Most worrying is that the PS3 doesn't have a killer-app with
mass appeal, or any in sight. MGS and FF aren't going to be
near enough, don't kid yourself. MGS is definitely the best
series around but it's not a major system seller, and FF13
is an RPG... they were counting on Resistance to shift some
units, but Gears of War overshadowed it. PS3 doesn't have a
Halo and they don't even have the GTA exclusivity thing.
Those are the games that change fortunes, not MGS. Which
leads to bigger userbase which leads to more 3rd party
support which leads to a bigger library. What's going to
turn the tide for PS3? Especially with Halo 3 on the
horizon, which will be a mainstream event Sony won't be able
to match (loathe as I am to admit it).

M$ also seems to have first dibs on PC ports, and there are
some great ones on the way... Bioshock was cancelled for PS3
but is a go for 360. And Alan Wake is 360/PC only.

-----PART TWO-----

I'm a Sony fanboy so I want to believe Sony can pull this
off. God of War, Ratchet and Clank, Metal Gear, Final
Fantasy, Devil May Cry, the next game in the ICO/Shadow of
the Colossus bloodline... it's going to have a great
library, definitely better than the Wii's, but the days of
Sony getting third-party AAA exclusives in the droves are
over. It will be a long, long time before they match the
360's library.

The Wii will sell but it won't be able to compete with the
games on the other two, the ''innovation over horsepower''
tactic is weaksauce considering that the games aren't even
innovative at all and the system's lack of juice will
prevent it from getting RESIDENT MOTHERFUCKING EVIL 5.
Instead it gets a shitty spinoff build around the Wiimotea
and recycling old environments. Yeah, that sounds inspiring.

If i were to choose a system right now, I'd choose the 360,
simply because it has very good games and the others don't
(yet). as i see it wii is playing for a different market so
it's not in direct competition with microsoft and sony.

sony looks fucked.

In 6 months the xbox360 won't be able to handle the graphics
my PC is producing.

And why are you people buying PSPs? Are their commercials
really that convincing? What a waste of money to own a brick
that requires you to re-purchase all your dvds in a new
format so you can take it on an airplane, watch 2 movies
with no sound (unless you have headphones because the jet
engine will drown out its shitty speakers) before the
battery dies due to the huge lcd screen that has poor
refresh rate. Or maybe you bought it for the wireless
internet which requires you to select every key you want to
type manually with a d-pad. Super fast internet browsing
that actually waits on you as you type the urls ! Only 250$$
Plus another $100 for decent mem storage (not included).

Spore for DS anyone?

Even now the 360 isn't up to par with PC hardware but that
never stopped the PS2 from dominating. There's so much money
in consoles that most games will be developed with that
mind. Truly prohibitive technological envelope pushers like
Crysis come along... just about never, everything gets
ported. Even Half Life 2 for Xbox was very playable. The 360
will almost act as a bottleneck because devs see what games
like Halo and Gears of War are doing and say ''hey, we need
to put this game on the 360'', so the 360 isn't in any
danger of becoming obsolete anytime soon.

As far as the PSP is concerned, I'm getting one for the
awesome Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops alone. Maybe not a
smart investment but it's MY investment.

Agreed, I just think its annoying that 360 isn't backwards
compatible. That's where playstation rules, imo

I think Sony dropped the ball this time with regards to
backwards compatibility. I was looking forward to playing
games like SOTC and MGS3 in HD, and I would already own a
PS3 if I could, but they blew it with wonky BC.

360's is even wonkier but at least most of the games I like
are properly emulated (except for Thief 3 and Rallisport 2)
and they look awesome scaled up to HD. PS2 games are such an
eyesore on HDTVs, while Xbox1 games look superb. This really
grinds my gears.

I saw gears of war, and.. what's the fuss? People are like
"best game of the year," but it looks like generic shooter
#508940. Halo is usually fun, but only when you can do
co-op.

And, MGS4 and the new final fantasies will be more than
enough
, at least for me.. Those (and silent hill) are
just about the only games worth playing anyway.. there are
so many "new" games coming out all the time that don't have
anything new about them at all... and where did the good
adventure games go? I'm going to try out tunguska, but I
think I'm going to be disappointed again.

i wanna get a ps3 out of the next genconsoles. except,
theres not a chance in hell im gonna be getting one anytime
soon with that price. i just hope there are small surprises
along the way to make the ps3 good. the ps2 was awesome, and
then after the xbox came out, they still started releasing
awesome games. i dunno, i just hope nothing happens to sony
or the ps3 cos i want more of these awesome games showing
up. the only game on 360 that interests me is dead rising.
the wii has zelda and mario..andsuch. plus i never got a
gamecube so im gonna have to get a wii some time soon and
catch up to the max.
