more of an Art, isn't it?

i mean, there's a lot of logic, sure, but that's about it..

If philosophy is an art, then so is football.

i'm not saying it's not.

football's a great game. just stay the fuck away from the
news, yeah?

that's my sentiment.

eh.. ok, first of all I'd like to know how logics separate
from the rest of philosophy in a way that makes it more
"science," and secondly.. it's not natural science,
but it is indeed science.

as wiki says, "Science in the broadest sense refers to any
system of "objective" knowledge."

There are "schools of philosophical thought" which
contradict each other and will do forever, yet they'll all
have followers.

Hmm, so according to wiki, in its broadest sense, science is
a crock of shit.

There's no such thing as 'objective knowledge'.

Knowledge everyone can agree is true - there's no such thing
as that?

What're you on about?

offline ecnadniarb on 2007-01-23 13:22 [#02036920]
Points: 24805 Status: Lurker | Show recordbag

I agree with Marlowe. What is accepted today is disproved
tomorrow.

Of course there is no universally accepted knowledge.

Points: 12878 Status: Addict | Followup to ecnadniarb: #02036920

Yeah.. and that's the basis for scientific discovery.

So what's objective knowledge today is proven wrong, and
then isn't objective knowledge tomorrow.

It's knowledge, not fact that we're talking about here.

offline ecnadniarb on 2007-01-23 13:26 [#02036925]
Points: 24805 Status: Lurker | Followup to redrum: #02036922 | Show recordbag

So the only knowledge you have is knowing you are wrong
tomorrow which means you don't really know anything.

eh

ok

look up science in a decent dictionary plus its etymology.
science ranges from knowledge of [subject] acquired by study
and theories about this subject.

secondly, something being objective hasn't got anything to
do with people agreeing; consensus != objectiveness. If that
was true, it would've been objectively true that the world
was flat a while back. Objective knowledge would be
knowledge of what a thing is in itself, and we sadly don't
have access to this (mostly because a thing in itself
doesn't make any sense to anyone; we require it to make
sense to us, so we measure it and use it for stuff, etc
etc).

Points: 24588 Status: Lurker | Followup to redrum: #02036922

Knowledge is higher up the hierarchy than fact, which comes
from the Latin for "to make".

You're talking about subjective knowledge, not objective
knowledge. It is impossible for a human to be objective,
because their very existence as a subject
subjectifies anything they may do.

Points: 12878 Status: Addict | Followup to ecnadniarb: #02036925

Not all of it is wrong tomorrow.

It COULD be, but since most of the world's architecture,
technology and modern life is based on scientific discovery,
the vast majority of it most certainly won't be.

knowledge, yes, but not objective knowledge: anyone claiming
to have objective knowledge is a dolt. Denying objective
knowledge isn't denying knowledge.

i find it amazing the amount of knowledge people have about
sport. the fixtures, the players, formations, club history
etc.. imagine if people used that ability to aquire
knowledge about something less trivial and something that
could improve our collective quality of life.

sport is fucking boring to watch. fuck me how tedious.
playing sport is good fun.

Mexican League is great because if you tie 0-0 almost all
the games and win/lose a few you end up in second place.

One time while I was in Europe I watched The Netherlands
play Germany in a bar in The Netherlands, surrounded by a
bunch of crazy Dutch fans during the European Championships,
and since then I've been hooked!

what a carry on about sport having no place on television.
seriously, can the useless cut-out sitcoms and unfunny
comedies, and put More sport on. you guys would be lost over
here with the day-long broadcasts of the cricket. Thats the
way things should be!

i've been a Juventus supporter for years now. There are very
few other teams that i actively like, so this year has been
a bit funny for me. i've been following Valencia some, but
they are not playing as well as they could.
