Do you choose to listen to music solely because of the musical qualities or are you subject to the general view / image of that particular genre or artist?. It seems like many people declare themselves immune to this and claim to be open minded people that have moved beyond trends and image.
I confess I'm more attracted to music that has an obscure or elitist image. While I've no problem admitting that I like mainstream bands, I prefer fronting the more obscure ones, to give me more credibility.
What do you think?

I think you should rethink the politics of your music-listening.

i'd have to like it myself. doesn't matter if its crazy frog, modest mouse, aphex twins, vivaldi or crazy frog, as long as it sounds good i'm happy with it.
funny. i'm almost always playing music, a good 40% of my waking time is filled with it, and people around me recognise a quarter or less of those bleeps and beats. i think i'm too stupid for 'taste', i like everything, and i just happened to stumble across upon the idm world.

music is art and i try to support independent artists every chance i can afford to. of course i like mainstream music as well, but i don't spend money on that shit. i like to have to actively search for new music, not when new music gets shoved down my throat from every media outlet under a giant corps umbrella. maybe it is elitist to feel good about discovering a relative unknown artist that 90% of the rest of people have never heard of and likely never will. but that's just me. i'd say i'm not particularly tied down to one genre or another but i understand what it feels like to want to create music and have it be appreciated. but if you're out to create music that everyone will appreciate then i probably won't like it cuz i don't think you can generalize your audinece just for sales. i like niche type genres, ones that focus exclusively on a single facet of human intrest. now if all the artists sound the same in a particluar genre that's fine cuz i don't think every artist can crank out golden tunes every time. so with a genre that isn't hardly recognized outside it's own scene you have a lot better chance of hearing some quality shit from several different artists.
i think i typed artist and genre too many times.

It's a mixture. Sometimes I listen to the stuff I 'approve of,' stuff that fits into my ridiculous, sometimes hypocritical, personal framework of ideals etc., and other times I listen to stuff just because it feels good.. often resulting in so called 'guilty pleasures.'
Still, if you listen to something because it feels good, it obviously strikes a chord somewhere deep down. So, should it be 'guilty' at all? I've been grappling with that one for a while.

Case by case, I listen to a lot of genres and for very different reasons. Except one unifying reason, which is their soundy goodness.

I think Sclah is right. If you look around on myspace you will notice everyone thinks they have 'eclectic' tastes. You almost always judge music before you hear it, based on where you heard about it from usually and what you affiliate with it. I'd like to think I give most things a chance but theres plenty of factors that get in the way. When pop acts get some credibility (Timbaland production for example) people seem more prepared to like it openly even though I think the music itself is still as 'pop' as it ever was.

I listen to music that I like. I like lots of different styles of music, and when I listen to those usually depends on my mood. I can easily listen to Paula Abdul, then switch to Kid606, then some Brian Eno, etc. Whatever I like I like!

i like to listen to non mainstream music, mainly because you're not subjected to it everyday. on the radio, in the shops, at work, on tv, wherever you look its there. all the fucking time. occasionally you'll get a decent mainstream track out, and you think 'yeah this is pretty good' and then it just gets exposed to a level of excess thats just sick. people are thick. and the rest of mainstream music is for thickies who can't digest anything deeper than a gravy boat or more complex than a straight line. there i said it. i'm an eliteist prick. i dont care.

I listen to the music I like. I think I really am one of those people that a lot of people claim to be that I do like all sorts of music. There isn't a single genre I don't like at least something in, even to the extent where I have bought music from pretty much every genre.
This isn't through some desire to be universal- I don't care if people perceive my tastes as elitist- but more that whilst some genres are undeniably (to my ears) better than others and have more "good" tracks, even country and western (which I think exemplifies dumbed down music for the masses almost to the same extent as pop) has a couple.
Occassionally, I'll listen to a track I don't like because I want to study some part of it. IE even in an attrocious pop song, you might be able to learn how to do something clever by listening to the drums.
I must confess that most of the time, I listen to either dubstep, radio 1 or IDM these days, even though I actually own more hip hop than any of those.
