of the artists you listen to. Lets say your favourite
Musician, DJ whatever, turns out to be a NAZI or a makes
some racists comments in an interview, like Eric Clapton.
Would you stop listening to his music

I can't deny it wouldn't put me off, but with instrumental
music I'm not sure it matters. It would only really bother
me if there were lyrics that either directly or indirectly
conformed to the artist's idiotic viewpoints.

I agree with CS2x's feelings on the matter.

if the musics good i wouldnt give a shit. if a dj/electronic
artists made some really racist comments i'd probably hate
them and feel weird listening to them, but after awhile i'd
get over it and enjoy the music.
if i was into someone like eric clapton, any singer, and
they put their politicial/racial views in their lyrics, and
they were too extreme or i didnt agree with them, thats
another case. i might resort to ignoring the music..

that said! beck is now a widely known scientologist, and
their are some songs that fans kiiiiinda believe have
references and such, but i dont really see it. even if it
were blatantly obvious and his lyrics were clearly
showcasing his views on religion or whatever, but the music
was still good, i'd continue listening to his music.

Maybe the IDEAS itself infect your brain just through the
music?

I thought beck was just raised as a scientologist (I didn't
realise he was now)? I'm no big fan, so might well be wrong,
but that's the impression that I got.

Either way, I don't really think his lyrics mean much to
most people, even if they make sense to him. By and large
they seem to be nonsense, although that doesn't detract from
my enjoyment of them.

Wouldn't matter to me. Many musical geniuses have been
oddballs. It's a different story with lyrics, though. That
said, I mostly listen to instrumental work. Vocals can ruin
metal for me... or at least take from it's power... Megadeth
- "I've mastered magics, five!" [wince]

its both i believe. was raised as scientologist and it's
only been recently that in interviews and such do we know
that he's still one now.
also, there are people who work very hard day and night,
analyzing and trying to work out just what each and every
beck song is about.. with his newer albums, it seems either
beck songs are losing creativity or beck fans aren't able to
find deep hidden meanings within them. and of course, there
are fans who blame this on his association with scientology.

Do you mean you have to 100% agree on every topic with the
artist to be able to enjoy his art?

No, but imagine windowlicker had some wanky boy band lyrics
about unrequited love over the top. It'd make the track
worse, wouldn't it?

I like music to be abstract.

Minor chords make me sad, and I can't bear the feeling of
anticipation sevenths give me.

It really would depend on how forceful they are in the
projections of those sentiments... If the main goal of the
music is to spread a message I'm not confortable with, I'd
cast it off in a heartbeat. But if it's their personal
views, seperate from the music.. that's another matter.

Also.. got me to thinking, to what end do you seperate the
musicians' views from the musician?

It's one thing to say "X is a nazi, so I won't buy their
album", but taken a step further... "X likes brussel
sprouts, I hate brussel sprouts, they just lost a fan!!"

oh, btw - I actually like brussel sprouts.

I really don't care too much about personal views of
musicians, but as others have pointed out, it can taint the
music if someone's public persona is less than attractive.

As far as political lyrics, I generally prefer music without
them. There's nothing wrong with that venue of expression
necessarily, but I find it cheapens the music itself and is
rarely done tastefully. Rage Against the Machine, for
example, really rubs me the wrong way.. as do alot of punk
bands.

I'm never bothered by it. I listen to a lot of stuff that
would fall under the fascist category (NON/Boyd Rice), and
stuff that has a sort of fascist fetishism (Von Thronstahl,
Death in June, Blood Axis), but I'm... not a fascist,
nossir. People with different ideas, lol. I'm attracted to
things that I'm not, like, really into, y'know. Even with
the peace/love/no war stuff, I don't really feel any
particular affection for the message but I do damn sure love
me some sunshine pop.

If you want angst, nothing beats a minor 9th.
