 | their newest album is very uneven. all because of gore's personal problems, his creative block and gahan putting his
 "composition skills" into the tracklist.

i hope mark bell produces their next album or, at least,
gahan gets some block this time.

 CS2x, check Exciter. excellent production.

 | Like the Funkmaster said, Ultra was surprisingly good.. I think that one came out around 97 or 98, and as obara
mentioned the production qualities on Exciter are great
thanks largely to Mark Bell, although the songwriting's a
little spotty in my opinion. If you are talking about
anything from their later period, I'd recommend Songs of
Faith and Devotion. It's not perfect (sometimes the soul
influence gets a little grating..), but I think it has some
of their most powerful, gorgeous moments on it.. and if I'm
not mistaken it was produced by Flood, so it has a great
 sound to it.

 | To make it a bit easier for CS2x: Violator is perfect - so you should grab it ASAP. "Songs" is a soul-electronic album,
still with Alan Wilder in the recording studio, as he left
the band after this album. next is "Ultra", a strange and
cold electronic album with a few very warm moments.

all i'm saying might be a bit rubbish - you'll get your own
idea of DM 90s if you take the time to listen to their
 albums from the period.

 | depeche mode is really back on track after alan wilder's departure, now if he only could produce gahan's next solo
album = perfect (gahan's three tracks on "playing the angel"
 saves the whole record!)

Since I started collecting dm in 1987, all remixes has been
my special interest. Nowadays there are far too many and
several of the good ones never gets released. robag wruhme's
and Pantha Du Prince's versions of "lilian" and james
holden's versions of "the darkest star" are simply awesome!
(The new single "martyr" is great too, the original version
+ at least three of the remixes are really good)

You haven't missed anything if you didn't caught them on the
last tour, Gahan screams the lyrics of every track and
completely ruins every song. The tracks aren't much
re-arranged either (as they used to when Wilder was in
charge) so it's basically just mediocre versions of the
recorded original LP-versions... (I'm spoiled with
 autechre's approach to live-performance! :D ) You can always
 watch the live-spectacle on dvd.

 | "violator" is mixed by dub-house-legend francois kevorkian and his mixes of both the album and the singles sets a
standard that few of todays mixers can match!

"songs of faith and devotion" is the absolute peak
albumwise, Alan Wilder and flood were a great productionteam
 for Gore's songs...

 | there are almost two completely sepaerate entities working when you compare older dm material ie 80's and early 90's
versus newer dm late 90's to present. and that can widely
be attributed to the fact that there was creative divide
among members during the early stages of success in their
careers. one of the dudes left to start "erasure" (i'm too
lazy to look up his name nor, can i remember atm) and you
can tell how well that went for him...

personally, i think they went to crap when they released
"songs of faith and devotion". although, i do feel they had
a sorta 'resurgence' if you will, with the releases of both
"ultra" and "exciter" that seemed to go back to their roots.
now with their latest release, again, i get a sense of
struggle to appease corp big wigs and the long time fans
alike, which does not compute to me.

still, their early stuff will always be some of my favorite
 all time toons!

That was Vince Clarke, he was only with them on the first
album Speak and Spell, I think. He also was in Yaz/Yazoo..
you know 'Situation.' I love Erasure though.. in fact I
think they were much more consistent in their output than
DM. Although, if you think their output was consistently
shit, then I suppose that doesn't help much.

 | Violator is really the last great Depeche Mode album... After that it's simply not the same band anymore. Ultra is
ok, I guess. Exciter is surprisingly awful, considering that
Mark Bell produced it. I feel sorry for him. He should

 Black Celebration is my fave.

 | Pimpf is a laugh. I would love to hear an aphex twin remix of it.

I really love their early stuff. They have some stunning b
sides from the early days that I feel sort of archetype that
synht-pop idea of a "new romantic".

Take for instance "Now this is fun", the "See you" b side. A
synth pop symphony in its own right, without even knowing it
itself... Its my fave depeche mode track ever. Of course
it's all really Kraftwerk in the end anyway...

 | One of the best songs ever, makes my eyes water.
A Photograph of You is one of the most perfect pop songs
I've ever heard, I've been listening to it a lot lately.

 | I've been listening to "Ultra" and "Playing the Angel" a lot these last few days. I like the first 5 tracks of PTA (don't
really enjoy the rest too much), but the entire album is
badly affected by it's awful mastering, imho. I love
"Ultra"; it's got some of the best lyrics they've written,
 and it's broodlingly catchy.

 | the vinylversion sounds nice
(it's all about "vinylisation" these days if you're actually
still buying music, eh mainstream music, that is)

 | Depeche Mode are a singles band, great singles - patchy albums. The exceptions are Black Celebration and Songs of
 Faith and Devotion.

Exciter was one of their worst albums, dull and the
production horribly digital. The more Gahan interferes with
the songwriting the worse they're going to get.
