What exactly does "Games experience may change during
online play. ESRB Rating" refer to on video games?

Is this so someone can't sue the games co. when someone
calls their little timmy a, "fucking cunt" during an online
game?

it means that the developers can release patches that change
the fundamentals of the game...

Everquest 1, for instance, used to run on windows 95. But
eventually they released a graphic update patch that
required people to use Windows 98.

its to do with ratings and the nature of playing against
real people online. youre pretty much right.

that's not true.

It's related to patches changing gameplay, and even adding
new (possibly violent) content that have not been rated by
the ESRB.

From the ESRB

'Online games that include user-generated content (e.g.,
chat, maps, skins) carry the notice "Game Experience May
Change During Online Play" to warn consumers that content
created by players of the game has not been rated by the
ESRB.'

guess we're both kind of right.

Yeah, player made mods and stuff I guess they're thinking
of. But they don't rate the offical patches and mods either
though... strange.

I know that Everquest added that warning with the Ruins of
Kunark expansion set, after many, many complaints of people
having to upgrade to windows 98, after the original game
said windows 95.

Yeah, I think it has to do with the fact you're playing
online in a community with real people and so the game
experience differs greatly depending on what people are
there.

I always find trash-talking little shits during on-line
games of Warcraft improves my manliness ten-fold. I don't
know if anyone else has had any similar experiences
regarding this.

Genuine LOL at that.

Indeksical: I'd never considered about the rating of patches
before. I know that there was an official Blood patch for
the original Carmageddon, perhaps that was a way of getting
it round the censors (originally, they had to take the blood
out at their request)?

As I remember from when I had the original Carmageddon many
moons ago, you had to get a code or something to turn the
Blood on. Actually, I have no idea, I can't remember!

I remember the original Blood Code... ABACABB, Mortal Kombat
for Sega Genesis.

But the best was the Boob Code for Fatal Fury to make Mai
Shiranui's bosom extra buxom.

I'm trying to think how I knew the code -- I didn't have the
internet at the time, so it couldn't have been that way.

I'm pretty sure it was a patch (or maybe it was just a patch
that meant you didn't have to keep on entering the cheat?) I
have a magazine cover CD somewhere at my parents with it on.
I remember even as a teenager, being amused that this was
the most prominent "main attraction" in terms of how it was
displayed on the disc's cover (IE the picture was of that
and the text was dwarfing the list of playable demos etc.)

BTW if you've not played it, carmageddon 2 is well worth
tracking down - fantastic damage modelling for the time and
still great fun. Runs v. fast for fairly low spec machines
considering how graphically intense it is too.

I had Carmageddon 2 once, but at the time I had my crappy
PC, and it wouldn't run. I actually downloaded Carmageddon a
while back, but found it to be unplayable! The graphics were
just so blocky and ugly. Real shame. A slick updated version
would be nice. I heard Carmageddon64 for the Nintendo was a
pile of poop.

I never liked Carmageddon 3, or the console games much; the
series peaked at 2 for me. The first two are top though.
Mowing down church-goers as your character says, "Say your
prayers!", classic!

I know what you mean about playing carmageddon 1 now. 2
doesn't suffer from this at all though- probably as it's no
sprites, all proper 3d.

Looks like I'll have to re-acquire it! I've been trying to
get Championship Manager 2 again, to 'help' with my writer's
block. I read that it's abandonware now.

That's a good question.

'Game Experience' seems pretty vague. I'm not sure; is it
referring to 'experience' in terms of skill?

i thought it was to account for things like lag which only
occur online and have an adverse effect on the game
