Just a quick post to thoroughly recommend Lumines 2 (a falling brick colour matching puzzle game on the PSP). Whilst I really liked the original, this one is even better. More like Lumines 1.5 than 2 really though; pretty much all the content from 1 is still there, but there is a slew of new modes and features.
Quite a nifty feature for the music makers amongst us is the inclusion of a very basic tracker-like sequencer (think Moonfish without the FX and you'll not be far off) to make your own tracks which you can play. When I read about this feature I'd assumed it'd be a weak, fixed tempo "stitch together loops" ejay type thing more for doing remixes than writing tracks, but you can actually put individual drum hits down and pitched sounds too. Although you're limited to 8 bars which loop, it fits the hypnotic quality of the game quite well. Similarly, the v. limited sound palette doesn't grate to much either.
Amazon have it for £15, so it's not exactly steep for a newish game, either.
Yes, I know this could go in the "Now playing" thread, but I thought it warranted its own thread as:
a) It's a music based game. b) Like Tetris, it appeals to people who don't normally play games as well as ardent gamers.

Have you played Every Extend Extra? That's pretty cool. I wasn't too fond of Lumines too, because I didn't find the soundtrack fitted in too well. Some of the rockier more shouty tracks were especially off-putting, imho.

Yes, I've played it and it grows a bit more on me each time I play it, but it lacks the instant appeal of, say, Rez.
Qrter: Only on some modes and you can choose to bypass the videos completely in "skin edit mode".

Some of the licensed tracks in lumines 2 are truely awful... a cheap way to try and gain more commercial success? I cant really blame them, but having the videos in the background is lazy and offputting.
Still, there are more tunes overall.... not worth the extra money for what is essentially the same game though in my opinion.

I liked playing Lumines from beginning to end, as an experience. I find Lumines 2 a bit jarring specifically because of those annoying tracks.
I'd love love love love Rez to be converted to PSP. I also wish Every Extend Extra was a bit easier.

Lumines 1 has either just come out (or is just about to) on the PS2.

I got Lumines Plus and I think it's really addicting. The only big, big downside of it is that it doesn't keep records of your scores, which to me is one of the most important aspects of puzzle games. Setting down blocks and shapes is fun and all, but the real excitement comes in trying to beat your own scores!
