Is it worth paying the extra for the UW?

Depends. Do you want/need a sampler? Aparently it rocks, and its twelve bit so it gives you a nice raw kind of 'organic' distortion. It also remembers whatever you sample with it, so its still there when you turn it on next.
Mind, I don't have a machine drum. Just a massive dose of GAS for one.

i've owned the sps-1 (non-uw) for roughly 9 months and i dont feel the ability to sample is worth the extra 200, although, i have it send midi to my sp-303 which has 64mb memory and almost 30 effects, and resampling...
for the 200 you do for the UW, you could get an sp-303. or another $100 and you can get an sp-404 if you want the ability to do retrigger and timestretching on its knobs. theres other samplers as well that you could hook up and send midi. you could even route the sampler back into the md's inputs and apply all the effects to it that you could with any other sound on the machinedrum
my problem is recording the MD, i don't know how. it always ends up sounding so different and i get frustrated. i'll record like a 30 minute session, cut the things out that i want, work w/ them in software and by the time i'm finished it sounds on par with any other song ive produced on software: weak and stupid. so i prefer to just jam with it, let the hours fly by and just make loops. im glad to hear you are getting one, you will really enjoy it. my current dillemma is: go out of the country this year; or get a monomachine. tough choice :(

The thing about the UW sampling abitility, is its designed to be sequenced similar to the other machines in the machine drum, so you get the parameter locks. You can automate the speed of the sample, as well as the start and end times. So it really is different than just sending midi out to another sampler.
What audio interface are you using? Thats probly the culprit is you don't have the proper tools to record it with. Its not just the software that you use for recording.

i would love to have machinedrum+uw . im all for being able to sample. i'd use it as a central sequencer, to drive other bits of gear, then sample them in, and have at it. no more latency for me, screw ableton live's plasticky sound ( :( )

Are you using on board sound? Or are you using a proper soundcard?

What I mean is, you aren't going to get a good recording if you are not using the proper tools to record. Maybe look into getting yourself a better audio interface. Something that will allow you to record multiple channels at the same time, so you can master it properly.

I really want some hardware but i really don't have the money. I need a guitar most importantly.
My setup now is starting to compare to a real setup these days.

Whever you can't afford new gear, do what I do and console yourself with the fact that Four Tet - Rounds was done largely in software and a guitar and recorded/processed on a Soundblaster Live 5.1 card. :)

I see what you mean. My solace comes from the fact that the track i got played on radio 1 was written on pentium 2 laptop with 128mb of ram. I just got some tasty monitors as it goes as well. I wouldn't have been able to afford the whole price but it was christmas so my dad made up the other half.
Sweet...
Sorry i rambled a bit there.

The thing with adding contraptions and whatnot to your set-up is that you wonder how you ever got by without them, although you can be satisfied with very little

Dude, you are NOT an idiot for buying a monomachine.
A suggestion might be to advertise on some internet forums that you trust, and see if someone has a machine drum with the userwave that they don't use, and wouldn't mind trading with yours for an extra hundred pounds or so. That would give you a cheap upgrade, and make them happy too.

first impressions are very good, had a mess around last night and plugged in my decks, 101 and 606 - the recording quality is fantastic, better than i was expecting even after reading all the praise about it online. only quip so far is that it lost the firewire connection once for no reason, but i think it's probably because i'm using a cheap fw card. i'd recommend it, especially if you only have a standard soundcard now and are getting the md.
