distractions

If you were to only have a piece of paper, pencil and
nothing else in your room - that is - no other distractions
in your life.
- then it stands to reason you'd become a very proficient
artist, right?

So its reasonable to assume if you only had a Piano to play
with, you'd probably, with training, become a very
proficient pianist.

So with kids of today having so many distractions does this
mean we're likely to see less and less prodigal and orginal
artists and musicians?

no. I'd use the paper for math proofs.

And I'd rip out to piano strings to hang myself with.

To be serious, a good mind is a good mind. A bright good
will become bored with retarded distractions. I mean,
things are more annoying now, but it's not like we all run
after girls all day, and none of us do things that require
true dedication and ability.

A person needs to develop their own sense of direction and
need.

distractions can be very inspiring, and I'd say they're
required for proper artistic output.

Sneakattack, your avatar is still awesome after so many
years. But it distracts me from writting clever posts.
Please remove it.

I agree with Drunken Mastah. A good distraction works
insprirational.

Maybe we'll get prodigal nintendo players... A new
generation of inspired game music writers.

Since when have the best musicians and artists been locked
in a room with NOTHING other than a piano or a piece of
paper and a pencil?
There have always been distractions, whether they came in
the form of the outdoors, board games, other people or
whatever. People who become good at art and music do so
because they enjoy it and because they want to put in a lot
of practise, not because they have to because there is
nothing else for them to do. I think anybody who was stuck
in a room by themselves with only one or two items would go
fucking insane and kill themselves, rather than get
proficient at playing the instrument/drawing.
It is often the people who experience more and have more
distractions who can make the most wonderful art/music (cf
Drunken Mastah's post).
