Selling your music on MySpace

Have we discussed this? Is it worth discussing? Is Snocap
something bad (I thought it was some anti-p2p thing). Would
you consider it? Is it just another legitimate avenue for
artists to sell their work.. or is the whiff of The Man all
too strong as he greedily stuffs your underground tracks
into his corporate underpants. Who buys this rubbish anyway?

Fuck that. MySpace should be freely raped IMO.

I think I remember readin' something about the music you put
on MySpace... The "User Agreement" states that everything
you upload automatically belongs to MySpace owners... but
can't remember much...

Snocap reminds me of what mp3.com tried to do circa 1999

There were loads of shit going around about that, they
changed the terms since then.

I don't think that wass true, what they were saying was they
have the right to play your music on their site, otherwise
you could upload your music, some other user plays it, and
then you go "wtf???!?! who said you could play my music???
You owe me $$$$$$$$$$$s in damages" like some craven
American legal eagle with blood in his nostrils might.

Just logged in to see there's a mail from fella Tom
explainin' some of this stuff... To me it seems a waste of
time.
Nobody would buy our stuff.
They don't buy our cds or vinyls.
We make more money sellin' t-shirts with our logo.
Sad but true.

ZZ Top sold more key rings than records, don't worry about
it.

No worries here. I just do it to play gigs and get free
beers and drugs...

The user agreement used to say that everything you upload
belonged to them (still does, actually), but they changed
it, so that the terms in which they use your material is no
longer for THEIR gain, only to give them the rights to play
it on their site. They used to be able to redistribute it
at will for anything (even sell it). I cancelled when I
read that change.. then 2 months later they changed the TOS
policy.

They probably changed the TOS because it's like me saying
"I've downloaded one of your mp3s, it's now mine", it's
untenable. How many signed artists are on that site? Or if
I, Dave Spratt, uploaded 4 tracks by BOC on there, would
MySpace have instantly "owned" them? Of course not, absolute
piss.

Friend of a friend. Probably the worst way to go
about things. I'm not bothered myself it's just, I know
people who did buy it and, to be fair, they were supporting
me and not.. some pretend lable that wasn't even interested
in investing that money back into.. the label, so... I don't
know, that's the music biz, I guess, even at the most
humdrum, trivial, poxy level.

well ive been on myspace but have no idea what that
sno-wotever is. i've been asked to play 2 gigs (one has
already happened, the other will happen end of january) and
hopefully will get toplay a3rd. no idea if the donate button
on my page hs gotten my donations, no clue at all. itsbeen
weird, but also decent. theres some really creative people
on myspace, like thomas jerome newton for instance, whose
timelapse stuff simply owns. and so on.

Readers of "Air Biscuits" also bought "Touching the Cloth"

That is interesting though, the mix of Hits and the Long
Tail, there is hope out of stagnant pop music and a billion
crappy tracks on the net, but the shittest part is how we
consume music generally now, but when the dust settles and
those sort of services become more widespread artists and
audiences will find each other regardless of economics and
tossing off media slags.

offline dog_belch from Netherlands, The on 2006-12-13 19:22 [#02016995]

And then, having read that, I slashed the price of my
"album" to $1. One Dollar! That's what.. a tip to the guy
who looks after the lavvy, which is admittedly more useful.

As you say, when the dust settles I'm sure there'll be some
beautiful connections. It's deffinitley not there at the
moment and I do miss allready the shared "event" of an album
release.

I was going to say that about shared experiece, it's like
"the old days" and just three TV channels, you went to
school knowing everyone had seen The Sweeney. But, I
suppose, what with online.. communities.. and maybe The Kids
being more suited to "that sort of thing", the shared
experience will come in places like, hey, XLT v2.

I was under the impression that the "done thing" with music
on myspace was to upload unreleased/alternate versions of
tracks or new material, thereby giving your audience
occasional tantalising glimpses of it, but preventing them
from ever listening to it with any sort of regularity thanks
to myspace's "Shittiest ever music player (TM)".
