so now (-as of january) avg free isn't free, does anyone
have any other recommendations or know of another freeware
alternative?

I've installed 7.5(also free) and everything works normally
like 7.1(version that stops)

Umm, as far as I know, AVG Free is still free. They just
want you to update to 7.5. You can download it
here.

"so now (-as of january) avg 7.1 free isn't free, does
anyone
have any other recommendations or know of another freeware
alternative?"

Fix'd. So yeah, 7.1 doesn't have any support as of January,
but 7.5 Free does. Learn to read next time.

on avg's pop up, it's made to look like that you will have
to pay for it. they do this so you buy it. arsehole.

that's what i use as well.

anyway, avg sucks, it misses 1 in every 5 viruses.

take a look at these test results.

Do you think Norton writes mos tof the viruses? Kinda like
how firefighters often start fires. Good for business.

i switched from avg to avast lately and it hasnt done me
much wrong yet.

i love how bad all these test results are. that doesn't make
me feel good at all. i always thought antivirus programs (at
least ones you have to pay for, like norton) were a lot
better than that... hmm.

o well, i guess it still pays to be careful.

ctrl-v
"AVG Free 7.1 version will be discontinued on 15th of Jan
2007."

offline mcbpete from Devon (United Kingdom) on 2006-12-10 12:12 [#02015384]

Or to quote the full press release:

"GRISOFT is announcing a new version of the AVG Anti-Virus
Free Edition. This new 7.5 version with improved performance
and user interface is available. Users that are using AVG
Free 7.1 will be provided with a specific dialog, within the
next few weeks, with the opportunity to choose the right
option fulfilling their needs. AVG Free 7.1 version will be
discontinued on 15th of Jan 2007."

But apologies for the rude post on Friday, I was pretty
drunk and don't actually remember posting that at all (the
cocktail double-vodka and vintage champagne at our office do
wasn't the best of ideas).

Actually since this topic has come up and looking at
choasmachine's link I have since moved from AVG to Active
Virus Shield by AOL, it has AOL in the title but is somehow
[well actually I know how, it's powered by Kaspersky]
actually good. And it has a much smaller footprint than AVG
but higher percentage of virus-catchability-ness.

So your topic title should've been "r.ip. avg free 7.1
version", do you find yourself caught out by a lot of
Internet based things that even my mother would safely
circumnavigate? Don't bother to find out about something, or
even digest the information, simply make a post on XLT about
it. OH NO, no more support for 7.1 avg free, god knows I was
onto their helpline day and night saying "WHY AREN'T YOU
FREE ANY MORE, I WANT FREE STUFF TO PROTECT ME WHILST I SURF
GROT AND OPEN ATTACHMENTS FROM PEOPLE WITH NAMES LIKE
A.BANDERSNATCH - LOOK HERE MAN YOUR PENIZ IS TOU SM@LL"
