this topic is meant to be an advertisement for the UCAPPS PROJECT
i just finished my own design LAZY_midibox and i'm really proud of it.
actually - the only thing i new about electronics before i made it was which side to hold the soldering iron.
took me about 3 weeks to make the whole thing. costs about 100 dollars for everything (including soldering iron and power unit).
the front plate is a plexi-glass plate glued to a box which is a segregator for screws. i made all the openings with a simple driller - i know that it doesn't look maybe very professional - but it works.
also - the ucapps system is very strong when it comes to mistakes in soldering or bad connections. there is probably no way to destroy the unit.
i can help someone out more if he wants !

yeah these are awesome! I always considered building my own, but i thought it was abit too expensive. Sounded like you had a very good deal there though.

first thing : just do it !
i now that sounds cheezy but i was afraid too at the beginning that i won't make it or it will be too difficult.
but i had some great help from the ucapps forum and found some people in poland who helped me out.
one of them made me the core module - but i have to say that i would make it on my own too now.
if you are really afraid you can get soldered modules from a bunch of sites on the internet - the are pricey but then you'll be shure that everything works quite well.
the tricky part is to program the microchip - you need a special burner for that and this is quite a difficult thing to do but also - you can get a programmed pic on the net too or i'll guess you check the forum out. maybe you find some netherland people.
one thing that you should check out before you get to make this is if you have some good place to get all the parts.
the electrnic parts themselves aren't so hard to get - thorsten klose really designed this system very well so you can make it from really simple parts.
but you need someplace to get your pcb's (those plates where everything is stuffed in). you won't rather be able to make them yourself and they are quite important - if you have a good one making a module is really easy.

I've been planning on thinking about building the FM synth, mostly because I think it would be hot to design a nice interface and get the rack professionally machined, but I have been putting it off. Kudos on the DIY job. You have every reason to be proud. :)

Now that I think about it, it would be pretty hot to build a 4 voice FM that has an additional sid oscilator.

That settles it. I am going to sit down tomorrow, and put together a plan to build a midibox CID. Watching those videos and reading the documentation has provided me with more than enough of a motivator. Thanks for the inspiration dude!

i don't know if this would be possible without some serious programming skills because you have different applications for the midibox sid and the midibox fm.
maybe you could search the forum or even create a new topic there about your idea.
maybe it's even possible to somehow connect those two modules together to for example be able to to make some frequency modulation of the fm module with the sid.
i would really want to make a fm module by myself too, you know without some fancy case just computer controlled but when i saw those tiny little pins on the opl3 chips that i'll have to solder i said no... maybe a few hours of soldering later :D

If you want to see something really cool you guys should take a look at the Monodeck.... SUPER AWESOME.
I've been dreaming of building a deck like that...

now that's interesting - i just looked at the ingredients of this monodeck and there are modules from the ucapps site!
thought he used doepfer modules.
so it's possible for you to make exactly the same thing!

LAZY_TITLE he even clearly tells it.
i remember now - the monodeck I had a few doepfers in it

I was just thinking that they be tied through the same midi cable & channel, and get mixed down before a final filter or something.

maybe you get in touch with the guy from this forum topic
LAZY_TITLE
he used 8 sid and one fm in one box - maybe ask him how he managed the midi thing.
i for myself would love to once make myself a multi-synthesis box like the monomachine consisting of a ucapps sid, ucapps fm, xoxox in one housing with multi timbral and filters.

That would be pretty sophisticated.
Right now I am just talking about building the sid tho...
