I've just been watching the Fawlty Towers DVDs, and contrary to what Mr.Cleese says about Basil in his interviews, I think he's a fabulous human being and can very much relate to his angry outbursts. With the amount of stupid drones piddling through the streets of every day life, it is actually beneficial to adopt an attitude like Fawlty's, and it'll certainly make every moment that much more entertaining. Here's to Basil Fawlty!

just long enough. look at things like fawlty towers, the young ones, bottom, garth marenghis darkplace, brass eye, jam, big train and (for now) the office, look around you, mighty boosh, spaced etc. no chance to get stale. then look at things like red dwarf and friends (in fact any american sitcom). they go shit before theyre finished.

you make a good point here, and I too love "the office" and "look around you". I know deep down that fawlty towers went on for the perfect length of time, but another side of me just wants more. I'd also like more of the look around you episodes in the same vein as the first series rather than the second...and more "peep show" would be lovely.

What's wrong with red dwarf? That show was ace from start to fin. Maybe a bit of S8 was stale but for the most part, the humour was always fresh.

I'd say S07 of Red Dwarf was the weakest... S08 is actually much better than its rep. Also, season 02 of Look Around You was, I thought, pretty hit-and-miss.

I feel like we've had this discussion before, in a red dwarf thread.
Personally, I loved Series 7 but it was a major shift from 6. Maybe because it wasn't in front of a live audience anymore or disputes between Grant and Doug? Something was amiss, but I thought it still had a lot of the familiar wit and humour intact.

I for one, think Red dwarf is almost completely unfunny!
I love the sketch in little britain, where the hypnotist tries to sell things in a flea market, and he succesfully gets a guy to buy an incomplete "Black Adder" collection, but he can't get him to buy "Red Dwarf".
Even for a non native english speaker like myself, i really admire the way the language is used in Black Adder. It's a shame Atkinson mostly did wordless humour after that.

i personally feel Red Dwarf lost it after series six. it ended so well then there was that massive break then they bought it back and i just didnt find it funny any more.
also looking back on that earlier post i cant believe i cited friends as an example. that was ALWAYS shit.
Black Adder is ace.

It's odd how irregular the quality of the second series of Look Around You was, actually. Some episodes, like the "Health" or "Computer" episodes, were top notch, but others seemed uttterly dire.

Yeah, that's more or less how I felt. No surprise there's been no sign of a third series!
