I made a drill tune for a compilation wich I call "big
life", it's 4:32 long and reminds me of the color red.
If you care to have a listen and tell me how you feel about
it then you can find it on my zebox page (warning zebox
seem to have a new player that automatically starts when
entering the page so be carefull with your volume!)

(warning 2 for those of you who can't stand the amen break,
it it's in there!)

I thank you for your time

this is great!

It's like I can't even find the amen break in it, which is a
good thing.

I've been drinking, though.

Like Drunken Mastah, i've been drinking as well, and i
enjoyed this quite a lot actually.

The modulation in the middle is a nice touch.

Nice track, indeed.

It reminds me more of the colours green and blue, than red,
though. :)

tack sir, I always think of tracks in colors, it's quite fun
and interesting, red and green is the most clear colors of
this track, blue is not even near it in my mind haha!

youll have to teach me how you get your drums so clean,
whenever I try and write drill tracks, my drums get so
splattered together and dirty (in a bad way)

Personally it sounds like prog nonsense. Nicely recorded
but all the tricks are cliche and makes me think of
'iidm rockism

the soul in it, regardless of the cliche tricks used.

Nah, on my first listen it's flexing puny IDM muscles. It
probably is harsh but you can't say you are going to revisit
this track for a few years, or can you?

thats true, im sure it will eventually fade away, and that

of depressing, but I see your point

I found this very musical and exciting. I love the key
changes that occur in the second half in particular
(something most musicians in this genre seem reluctant to do
for one reason or another...) Very polished and powerful! I
see "red" too, for some bizarre reason, perhaps because you
told me I should. ;-)

Thanks allot gentlemen for listening, I certainly appreciate
it :)

Diazohex: you find the drums clean ? I'm not very fond of
the sound of the mix on either the amen or the other two
breaks in there, I had hell trying to eq them to make them
sounds bright without being to "sharp" and once I was fairly
happy with the mix the guy masterering it told me he had to
cut allot between 3-6khz.
A good thing when mixing fast drums is to not use any long
reverbs, the mix level of the reverb can be high but avoid
having a long lenth as it really can "greese things up"

Jivverdicker: I totally see your point about the "flexing"
part, it was made for a "drill 'n' bass" compilation so I
sort of thought that I wanted it to be a bit more extreme
with the programming and fx usage then what I usually do,
call it a strategic move to make the track stand out more on
the compilation.
Howerer, that doesnt mean that it's a good track, if you
don't like the music, the harmonies, melodies, arrangement
and so on then you most likely won't like it becouse of the
extreme drum programming, but I'm personaly quite satisfied
with the music even though I wanted allot of the background
sounds to be more audible in the mix so I'm quite happy with
the track.

But yeah, I'm guilty of flexing a bit and I'm also guilty of
not creating anything original here but for once (almost
once) I felt like it, been working on an album for a long
time now and on the album I really plan and try to do
something different with each track not overusing sounds and
fx etc.. simply needed a good dose of "wank" here for a
change :)

QRDL: I have never heard any flashbulb, heard the name quite
a few times though, not worth checking out acording to you
or ?

I recorded a drill similar to that one once, thought I'd use
it in some "drill track", then when I tryed it out it
sounded really stupid, I should have knowned!

know your construction process. Tip-top elasticism going on
there!

what do you mean by construction process ? making the track
start to finish or the arrangement or the drum programming
or what ? I'm willing to tell you whatever :)

Ow, and thanks for the kind words and for lending me an
ear.

Oh and Diazohex: I got nothing you can buy but more
downloads for you probably, check the url's to my various

buyers list though if I ever get the weird idea of selling

How you constructed the beats, I mean - I'm really bad at
making complicated drum patterns

Well, I start out with a break obviously.. cut it up (by
hand, no auto slicing that is) then I simply create a rythm
I like, in "drill 'n' bass" it's usually something junglish
sounding.. when making the base rythm I often try to give it
a twist, give it a alittle something that works well with
the bassline or with a certain part in a song.

Then I use that base on the parts of a track where I think
it fits then create alternative or completely different new
rythms for other parts of song and so on.

Once I have a couple of different "beats" for a couple of
different aspects of a track I start mixing it, perhaps add
another break right on top, you can experiment forever at
this stage but I personaly think it's important not to start
"fucking them up" as that will get confusing and unless
youre carefull it can go completely out of hand and you end
up without a good "base beat" all of a sudden, so save the
complex drum programming untill you have a good foundation
and a idea, a sense of where the track is headed etc.

Once you feel ready to start tweaking some I usually start
from the earlier parts of a track, start out carefully so I
don't overdo it too early (five million snare rushes in the
first few bars of a track is probably gonna bore the
listener aswell as yourself so.)
But that's also a matter of personal taste, I have a
tendency to wan't to "save" the most complex and "fuckt up"
drum programming untill later parts of a track but still,
focusing on little subtile details from beginning to start
is just as important.

There's a million ways to vary and tweak things in a subtile
way so I'm not sure if I can give you any concrete advice.
When it comes to fast beats though, one thing that is very
very important is variation, a jungle thing in 180 bpm can
get boring in 5 sec unless something is happening.

Perhaps you wanted to know how I made my drill sounds and
all those tricks ? that's all high tempo programming, very
simple :)

all my break samples sound like trash. I have to try and
find a site with better quality samples. You hooked me up
with the amen a long time ago but unfortunately I lost it
with the great crash of 05

Early pusher groove.
A bit painting by numbers. Nice though.

offline vveerrgg from life (Canada) on 2006-12-08 06:39 [#02014477]

i was thinking about how to make some beats like this.....
here's an attempt I have yet to do... but have figured out
and will eventually try on the sampler.

Part #1
- breakbeat sample cut in to various bits
- set start point (random)
- set end point (random + LFO)
- set duration (random - LFO2)
- set sample to loop ON

Part #2
- same breakbeat sample cut into kick / snare / hhat bits

Part #3
- key map both versions of the breakbeat to a midi keyboard

Part #4
- make beats patterns using both the blended samples and
straight samples

I haven't had time to actually try building a beat like
this.. but that's what I was thinking it would take to build
a keymap of a breakbeat that would have a similar quality
for a pretty live and fun sample drumkit.

Diazohex: here's some classic breaks

Jaser: thansk for listening, I agree with the pusher groove,
almost thought it sounded a bit too much like squarepusher
when I made it.

vveerrgg: what are you on about ? :)
