its really directed to those dealing with laptop-based recording. it seems that dell has taken over the laptop market in most of europe, the prices they offer are not too bad too. i might be buying one for lower price, without vat, hence a question : are dell laptops good enough for audio purposes ? anyone willing to use dell website's "customize" button and paste the reasonable configuration worth looking into in here ? or any advice anyway... thanks in advance. |

internally. loads of keys on my keyboard are fucked, have to hit them repeatedly to get the letter out, which makes using the computer pretty frustrating. generally they have a bad rep. i've gotten off easy, so far. usually they fail completely within about 3 years. |

just reading this thread, i was about to post "whatever you do, definatley dont get a packard bell. i've had mine just under 2 years and the screen is dead" (hmm i thought at least i have a back up monitor. which as soon as i thought that made a loud hmmmmmmmmmmmm and went black. mass panic. shit shit shit shit. oh wait, the power cable came loose.) nearly shit a brick. yikes. |

They are good as long as you get it running nice. I would not get a soundcard from dell though. Those you can do later. You will want a lot of ram for streaming audio tracks, cpu is pretty important, and you will want a big harddrive for all the audio which may build up! |

well i was thinking about getting presonus firebox for nice audio quality and midi controllers i have. im using external drives so im not worried about storage, i would obviously take duo core @ 2 ghz, and 2-4 gb ram. i thinks its enough, hovewer, im unsure if dell is the right option even with those specs. not too many opinions from people that own / owned one. |

I've owned an Inspiron for about 2 years with no problems. Also the company i look after use Dell throughout for all the users. Thats desktops and laptops. The lighter n more slimtype ones tend to experience more HD problems but in my experience those slim laptops are a bit sensitive. So buy a well built Dell if you do. |

problem beeing, all of those new-released dells look like plastic. i dunno wheter its just an impression or actual fact... so it really comes down to those little things that are not written in any reviews... |

believe it or not you need to make sure you have a decent graphics card as well as decent soundcard. avoid the intel graphics chip thang. i have an audiophile usb that i like. soundcards in laptops tend to be toss. |

If you want a tough/rugged laptop look at the IBM ThinkPad’s. The case and chassis are very well built. |

To second what redrum says; they're not very robust. They don't stand up to knocks and scrapes as well as some laptops and the touchpad buttons on mine are screwed, you need to hit them hard and repeatedly to get it to register. Likewise, the pad itself is one of the worst I've used. The internal soundcard isn't the worst I've come across, but it's certainly not up to the job for serious audio work. My company are partnered with Dell, so we only use Dell machines and whilst the servers are good, everyone here has similar problems with the laptops and I'd say 1/3-1/2 are replaced due to faults rather than being out-specced. |

I've got a Sonata tower case which is v. quiet. If you want a really quite one, you're either going to buy a machine made for music, or build your own. Lots of big fans on a slow RPM is generally a lot quieter that a few small ones. Similarly, if quietness is really paramount, get a slower CPU, or better still consider underclocking a faster one. I've run an underclocked CPU for the past 3/4 years, works well. |

Thinkpads are very good, but you do pay for it. They're aimed for business people more, so are built to last and have the best laptop keys for typing. Customer service is supposed to be brilliant on them. I'm considering splashing out on one, they are expensive, but by most accounts worth every penny. my friend spent an absolute fortune on a powerbook then after a month spilt a glass of milk on it and the thing died! thinkpads are splashproof and any spills drain from under the keys out a little hole under the laptop. I know which one I would buy... |
