I mean, you're not helping. Why is that w M w? -- They're just questions, w M w. In answer to your query, they're written down for me. It's a test, designed to provoke an emotional response. -- Shall we continue? Describe in single words, only the good things that come in to your mind about... your mother.

the program generated everything; the only tweak I made is that the resulting gif file was a few hundred frames: more than one cycle.

I just looked at the code and was reminded why it was so long--to make it general I made it a general cellular automata generator. so you could use the code to make.. well, infinitely many (ok not REALLY since we get 40kb, fixed color planes, etc.) other animations..
it takes a size parameters, I have deeper versions somewhere..

Have you tried playing with any of the cellular automata rules that result in complex/intricate behavior/ not nested or repetitive. I can give you some of the neat looking rules but you can probably find them online. You made the entire program or borrowed some cellular automata program somewhere?

I wanted to make a program that makes avatars similar to those squares, with quite a lot of random stuff to make it different each time. That would be quite hard for me.

I made the program, it took less than an hour.. not complicated. did it in ruby.
I forget which one, maybe ECA 31 is a random number generator.
the best way to evaluate CAs is using polynomials.. I don't know if wolfram gets into that in his shitty fucking book. then again, as much as he is a wanker, I think I've heard (from someone who knows him well) that he's smart.

also, an easy way to do the random behavior is use object orientation. have a base class that controls general square behavior which is shared across all box types, and have child types that have specific behavior. Then just create a bunch of boxes with random types, and watch them interact.
objects suck balls, but can make for easy and intuitive code like this.
