i played at this joint tonight -- and the sound was so bad

at home the mix is really good, my studio monitors (krk
50000) played all of my stuff i had prepared really good,
but i was peaking just a bit and i was under the thought
that it would kill ears over the venue speakers

so i put a compressor with side chain on the track with the
kick drum -- brought that forward. then put one on one of
the snarey sounds. ok. adjusted volumes and then put a
compressor on the main.

jesus christ, i should have checked the entire thing before
i played because it was fucking terrible, sounded like a
muddy ass being hit by a car, everything was just liquid,
mushed. i even set the threshold really high on the main
comp. so that it wouldnt do that. but, jesus christ. it was
awful. i upped the threshold on the main comp. and it didnt
do anything it was just shit. embarassing. not cool at all

what are some tips for mixing tracks for live sound? is it
possible that i have shit monitors at home? should i have
just not used a compressor at all? it was so bad i just
stopped early and went home -- so pissed off. i oughta take
a class on this :(

Well, in live situations it is not a very good idea to mess
with comps... I just use one as limiter in the master to
avoid blowin' anything (and checked beforehand for sure).

i have that free "c3multibandcompressor" which is
downloadable over at kvr. when i make a live set, i stuff it
at the main channel, use the preset "maximize2" and i'll
always sound good.

Be carefull with your compressors. Less is more. If you
notice the effect in your normal monitoring environment,
expect it to be too much in a live environment. Have a set
of backup speakers that sound like shit so you can compare
your mix to what it might sound like to a normal person.

Compression is the most overappreciated effect. It can be
difficult to work with, and kill your bass. Its best to try
to just use phasing and proper eqing to make your mix sound
better. I never use it as a way to save headroom, only as a
way to give my beats a little something extra if its needed,
which is rare.

Using it on your master channel is something you should
never do. I am sorry. Whoever came up with that idea was
probably a great salesperson, but I wouldn't trust them to
master anything other than a TV commercial.

And I don't mean to hate on people who like to use it as a
mastering tool. If thats what they like its fine, I just
think its a bad practice that should be avoided, kind of
like using fake wood wallpaper (real wood walls might be
harder to fit over drywall, but are much better in the end).

one thing that i read in some tutorial somewhere:

always add the compressors at the very end of making a
track. the track HAS to sound good without it, and the
compressor should just add a little bit more.

if you add a compressor at the very beginning you have like
no control over what's going on.

No. What I am saying is don't add compression unless
necessary. People seem to think that a song isn't complete
without it.

Its not like its a sin to use. Its just personal preferance,
but compression kills the personality in a song before
anything.

a compressor kills dynamics. so putting a compressor on a
kick snare and one on your master makes everything have the
same volume (no dynamics, all sounds are fighting for the
same frequenties). and PA systems usually have a
eq/limiter/compressor to. so basicly you stuff has been
compressed like 3 times. no wonder it will sound muddy.

put more work in creating a phat kickdrum instead of making
a sloppy kick and compressing the shit out of it so it
sounds phat.
that won't work. and don't put a compressor on your master
unless you actually know what you're doing. it isn't all
about maximizing your volume. if you use as little
compression as possible on your track you can put a
compressor on your main if you live just to boost up the
volume a bit. otherwise don't do it

IF you have some peaks in your tracks you can't get out try
putting a limiter on your master but on a VERY SOFT setting.
again, if you go overboard eveything will sound distorted
and crappy.

having a pro sound isn't about how loud you can get your
tracks to sound.

I always mix flat, and keep my DBX in the rack. For 2
reasons.. to keep my larger sounds from jumping out of the
mix.. and for 'that shitty soundguy' that won't turn it up.
:)

why use compressors when you can just let it DISTORT!

I did that and the record label asked me to send the tracks
back without the clipping. :)

why just *let* it distort when you can *make* it distort
with compression? :)
