What do you collect?

... In the Olden Days, everyone had a collection of
something meaningful to them. These days, people have
collections of PlayStation games, mp3s, talking dildos and
other meaningless things. What things do you collect other
than those mentioned above and Electronic-music-related
stuff?

I collect The Three Investigator books (and the two
audiotapes!). My most expensive purchases were £15 for a
1967 Hardback edition of #2, £15.49 for the first
Audiotape, The Secret of Terror Castle (a bargain!), and I
believe I once forked out £30 for another hardback. But
then, I've picked up some real bargains! Only £6.50 for a
rare paperback!!

The things I collected... I collected in the olden days.
Sometimes I buy shiny new updates of them.

Actually my father in law collected anvils, for reals. I
could someday inherit his collection if they don't get sold
- they're worth a dollar a pound, more for the old ones, and
they're 200 or 300 pounds each.

We need to get wmwmwmwwmw in here for some real! wacky!
answers!

I don't really have the collector personality, I like things
as much as anybody else though, I'm just terrible with
upkeep and such and a total slob so I cannot justify
acquiring neat things for the sake of acquiring neat things,
however attractive the idea of doing so is...my boyfriend is
that sort of thing though, he really puts a lot of energy
into maintaining and growing collections of various things
relating to his hobbies.

I think it's an interesting point you make regarding
collecting things. People often refer to their DVD or
videogame 'collections', but very few people are what I
would deem real collectors of those.

I think for something to be a collection, it has to be
something which doesn't (or at least, no longer) serves much
of a purpose, other than to be collected. Well, maybe not
serves no purpose, but more that the primary instinct is to
collect it, rather than use it for the intended purpose. I
occassionally (rather cynically) buy rare records/books that
I know will go up in value, if I can get them cheap, even if
I have no interest in them myself.

As a nipper I used to collect loads of things like monster
in my pocket, boglins, etc., but I think that's probably
normal amongst kids.

I wouldn't consider myself a record collector now as
anything I buy (other than the odd "as an investment" one,
like the Analord binder) these days is first and foremost to
have a high quality copy of myself.

i don't know if cds count as a collection, i just buy a lot
of them...

when i was a kid, i used to collect pencils and bottle caps
(how exciting). i also kind of "collected" fonts (so i have
around a thousand now, all selected). the latest collection
i did was dice (for roleplaying and stuff, quirky useless
ones like 34-sided ones, 7-sided ones, round ones etc). but
i kind of stopped; i will probably buy a 11-sided or 1-sided
dice if i ever find one for example, because i like quirky
and useless things anyway, but i'm not going to search for
it in particular.

haha, no, I don't think they're popular science, they just
have weird titles

I don't read them, really, nor do I actually collect
them actively, I just have a few of them. My favourite is
called "Gandhi and the atomic age."

yeah

in that respect, the only person I know who has a record
collection is my father

he's got so much stuff, and he keeps adding to it every day.
He probably hasn't listened to more than half of it more
than once, and some of it I believe he's never listened to.

cards.

Also Transformers, He-Man and Star Wars figures.

Keep checking eBay for a set of Insecticons, no dice.

I used to be a serious vinyl hoarder, buying stuff on
impulse several times a week. Spending £100 -£150 per week
was common. A lot of the stuff got listened to just once and
then filed away in the rack, never to be seen again.

Going to university broke my vinyl addiction.

I used to collect coins. Boring I know. I collected Eagle
comics too, but I don't know if you could call that a
collection since I bought them to read not just to collect.
My mum thinks I collect coasters/drink mats. Christ knows
where she got the idea from, but now whenever she travels
anywhere she'll always bring a new one back for me. The daft
moo.
