12 Tone music, anyone?

Anyone else interested in 12 tone music? I've just gotten
back into making music, and fooling around especially with
12 tone. I'm curious how others feel, you know-- is it too
much, or is 12 tone a relevant, viable system of
composition?

I appreciate it the historical signifigance of it and some
of my favorite contemporary composers either fooled around
with this style at one time, and adopted some traits into
their own styles, but I do not like listening to music made
like that.

On a philosophical level? Love it.. it's so pure. It's not
always easy to listen to though. Never tried to make it.

Don't pianist give it 12 tone when they're pissed?

12 tone doesn't have a key. Each of the 12 notes in a
chromatic scale are equally important, and the rules of
composition (for the style) are that you can't repeat a note
until all 12 notes have been played.

oh, so it only differs from composing in a chromatic scale
in that you can't repeat a note until the others have been
used?

12 tone music... serial music.

look up Arnold Schoenberg [or i could do it for you]

haha, I'm going to give it a go just for my own enjoyment

does it say anything about not holding the notes? I can
produce chords, right?

thanks i can get along with one tone already

yes, you can use chords -- as long as no note is repeated.
i don't understand traditional composition-- so that's the
only reason I'm so gung-ho into 12 tone. I don't know how
to make melodies with a regular chromatic scale hahahah :)

I usually don't bother with any particular rules of
composition, I just go with what sounds good

however, sometimes it's good to restrict yourself, and a
good way to do that is to just set a scale and work within
it.. hehe, a chromatic scale isn't really a restriction, but
the "don't use that tone before you've used the other tones"
is...

you're confusing a-tonal and 12-tone, one isn't necessarily
the other

There's like, "notes", and they're arranged in some sort of
order some think, but I'll be damned if I can make a song
out of them. People that write snakeman megaman 3 music
don't use these notes, they use "magic music particles".

No.

Moreover, you are allowed to repeate melodies that you have
made using 12 tone by going back and forth through notes
that you have just played, but that is the only way you can
repeat notes before going through all 12 notes. Like this:

C G C# G C G C# F

you can turn them around and you can transpose them within
the octave, like turning the series around vertically around
the middle note

also you can hit all the octaves

it's just a method of making things as complex as possible
because you have the least repetition as possible

also it's theoretical stuff

You know, I am having enough of a time learning scales.
Bullocks to all this wankery.

hehe, the theory is really simple, all 12 tones is an easy
scale :)
