I like it. Been listening to Dataplex lately. Insen and
Vrioon by Alva & Ryuichi is nice too.

i like ryoji ikeda, don't know carsten nicolai.

i think it was hyakusen who told me to listen to ryoji ikeda
once, I liked it a lot but then I never felt like getting
anything more... i think i prefer bloated over-produced
music anyway

get "cyclo", its a collaboration between carsten nicolai and
ryoji ikeda

ive been listening the shit out of it, i just love how its
real raw, has some moderately funky shit, but mostly is just
real raw and just unfriendly. real undressed music, dataplex
the same.. its displacing. i love music that is displacing
but has no real clear intent as to where youre supposed to
go, its just sort of like a vehicle.. you can go wherever
you want..

would i be wrong to assume that it's very difficult to
produce very minimalistic music?

I don't think it's "hard to produce" but I think you need
good judgement and a modicum of creativity.

alva noto & ryuichi sakamoto "vrioon"
dan abrams "stream"
minimalistic sweden "standard clickmusic" (very hard to find
but worth it)
mokira "clickhop" (genious"
sutekh "periods make sense" (classic must-have)

i love such kind of music because it's probably the only
music i can listen to when learning - other stuff attracts
my mind too much.

also - i love to listen to such albums on headphones when i
go shoping or just going to the town as sometimes the sounds
of the city combine really great with what you hear so you
sometimes aren't sure what's recorded and what's not

thanks for the reccomendations!

other stuff attracts my mind too much.
--

i feel the same way.

that song "C4" off of cyclo, are those notes? say you played
that song for Bach, mozart, or beethoven... how do you think
they would regard that kind of music? the sound that comes
in at 2:17, do you think they would ever feel roused or
emotionally responsive to it?

sort of like dial from gantz graf, that shit is funky as
hell and well danceable but simultaneously its just sort of
alien, all the stuff is raw. kinda like listening to
placeholders?

this is what I think of minimal music: this

this is relevant because there was minimal effort in making
this

this this this

ikeda and nicolai aren't really that minimal. you have lots
of producers who create their music based on silence instead
of sound. i wouldn't normally listen to that, but i can
appreciate it since it's obviously what they want to do.

than this though.

It's probably harder to do a good minimal track than one
that has shitloads of melodies and parts all layered on top
of each other. You can sort of bluff a good track with loads
of elements, when you only have a feew things going on, they
have to be perfect.

not a fan of something that would take someone less than two

really lacks any soul.

i think they intentionally want to avoid soul and
feelings..well, at least some of them. not all music needs
that to be good, but whether you like it or not that's
subjective.

in my opinion, minimal music composed by ikeda (dataplex at
least), alva noto and pan sonic is really interesting
(concept + sounds).

other creations like toshimaru nakamura and other japan
artists not well known could be interesting but bothers you
easily

I like some of it, but I guess it's more of a case by case
type thing with me, more so then other types of music. If it
doesn't have a REALLY nice melody or feel I'll probably find
it pretty boring. Because minimalist music is so, well,
minimalist, it really needs to be strong and almost to the
point of amazing to really hold my attention.

It's hard to produce good minimalistic music.

Normally, you can distract and entertain listeners with
loads of DSP trickery and intricate drum programming, but
making highly repetative loops that don't get boring in 6
minutes of a track (let alone stand up to repeated
listening) is pretty tricky.

yes i get your point - i guess that stricte minimal music
isn't really meant to be emotional at all. i guess that's
the whole spirit in it.

it's more about the beauty of a single sound at all.

offline sadist from the dark side of the moon on 2006-11-13 12:02 [#02001540]

i guess that "vrioon" was rather meant as an experiment
combining minimal music with the problably most emotional
instrument - the piano.

speaking of emotional experiments with minimal - check out
the swod "gehen" album - what a wonderful piece.

oh and if you want some more danceable minimal albums i
recommend:

snd "stdio"
snd "tender love"
geeez 'n' gosh "my life with jesus"

oh oh oh !

i know that maybe it doesn't really fit in this topic but i
just cannot stop recommending this album all the time:

institut fuer feinmotorik "preatorians"

these guys (4 of them) are making music only using
vinyl-decks but not with vinyl but just putting different
things on the slipmat!

highly recommended - but be aware it's quite rare and hard
to find on the net.
