What the hell is the deal with this track? Is it a hoax, or
what... is it Aphex? And where did it appear if it IS Aphex?

It's real. I'm not totally sure where it appears, I think
Gavin Bryars (or something) Rasing the Titanic ep or album.

Theres actually two remixes:

Big Drum Mix and Big Drum Edit

It seems as if the remix is a Special Edition inclusion on
The Sinking of the Titanic.

Ohhh... cool. Thanks, that was driving me crazy, not knowing
about that track. I only have the 3 minute edited version,
hmmm... and apparently there's a much longer version. Hmm,
you learn something new every day.
