what is the best standalone hardware sample-rate-reducer?
or piece of hardware that has an elaborate/complex srr?

wait wait wait

you need.. a.. standalone hardware item.. that reduces the
sample rate of.. some sound output... why..?

offline Drunken Mastah from OPPERKLASSESVIN!!! (Norway) on 2006-10-29 16:10 [#01994701]

why do you even want to reduce the sample rate in the first
place, and why not just do it on your computer? I'm not even
sure signal cables work with sample rates, so the sample
rate after having gone through a normal cable would be that
of the box processing it if that even has a sample rate...

they sound pretty bad, all the software ones ive tried out
dont really do it well. sps-1's has it and you can do it
through the inputs, but its just one param (level of
crunchiness). was wondering if there was something dedicated
for it and provided really good sound quality thats all, and
more options maybe. was just curious

isn't sample rate reduction something digital no matter how
you do it? I seriously doubt you'd get any boxes that do it
much better than a computer... I still don't get why
you want to do it...

Because it's a cool effect.

Here you go, the frostwave sonic alienator!

So you pretty much want a decimator?
If you're looking for hardware, the one in the Korg ES-1
effects is pretty good. You can do some awesome stuff with
the ES-1 FX.

wouldn't that just be some kind of distortion?

Beat me to it ;)

That frostwave are really stand up people. I bought a
resonator from them, and its the coolest thing on earth. I
plan on getting the sonic alienator next.

Yeah, frostwave is really nice. I had some nice
conversations with Paul Perry when I bought their
step-sequencer. I recommend frostwave to everyone :)

I just bought a kurzweil mangler. Their is some nice bit
destruction things happening there, plus a whole lot more. A
very high quality unit IMO. I don't know how much its in
your budget, but I suggest it.

try the e-phonic lo fi filter, i think it can do excatly
what you want. It's a VST and FREE

E-phonic

at the bottom "audio destruction unit"

I use it a lot myself.

They're great! Not a sample rate reducer more like low
sample rate without a choice but they sound fantastic!

offline Taxidermist from Black Grass on 2006-11-01 02:45 [#01996047]
Points: 9958 Status: Lurker

Yeah. I had a hard on for one since I got into hardware. I
eventually sold it because I wasn't using it very often (1
sampler is enough for me).

Now that I think about it, weren't you suggesting a couple
different hardware sequencers to someone here once? I am
thinking of trying my hand at a workstation that doesn't
start with mpc, and am kind of at a loss.

I've used analogue hardware sequencers by Doepfer and Korg
but they're only for modular/CV stuff.

Cygnus, did you try out the vst i linked? You really should,
it's brilliant.

Gotcha. I forgot who it was, but they started frequenting
here about the same time you did, so I thought it might be
you.

So, you have a modular system going? How are you liking
that?

the best software sample rate reducer I have tried is the
MDA degrade. Its true.

A friend of mine is well into his doepfer stuff, I get lost
in all the wires! I have a nord micro modular though which
is well cool, I find myself using it more as an effects unit
more than a synth.

You could check out these midi-sequencers taxidermist:
Alesis MMT8 - very nice
Roland MC-500 - cryptic, but good if you master it
Yamaha RM1X - haven't tried it, but I think it's supposed
to be good. I think I'm going to buy one of these
Yamaha QY700 - Looks cool, haven't tried this one either
Yamaha RS7000 - Tried it once, seemed nice

And I guess the Roland MC-808 and MC-909 could be nice as
well, but they're a little bit more expensive.

When it comes to step-sequencers I've only used the
frostwave one, and I find it very nice. It's got both midi
and cv/gate.

Talking about the Nord micro modular, that has a great
digitizer unit which is great for playing with sample rates,
loads of choice right down to 1bit crunchy shit.

Yeah, I might see if I can find a cheap one and use it for
fx some day. It seems like it's perfect for that kind of
thing.

Here's what I have in mind for my next workstation. I don't
know if all this exists, but I am sure something close is
out there:

Grid sequencing.
Nice big menu that is well lit.
Ability to connect it to a monitor and mouse for advanced
midi editing.
Non-esoteric storage media.
5 octave keyboard.
Lots of midi outs.
Copy/Paste.
An interface that doesn't require a degree in cryptography
to understand (too much thinking hampers creativity).

Sample it, play it into the speaker of a portable tape
recorder, resample that. Repeat to fade.

It will sound shit then, I promise.

I'd recommend 1! If you can be arsed with it you can
construct a full blown synth like the nord lead with it!

Yeah, I know. I've used the software version of the g2
engine to have some fun, even though it only lets me do
monophonic patches. I went down to one of the local hardware
shops with Staz and hooked a g2 up to a microkorg and an
RS7000. Was good fun :D

A neko? Kind of. I want a dedicated one-trick-pony sequencer
workstation, not a PC. Most certainly not something that is
going to cost $6000us :S
