currently i'm in school going for this animation associates. it's community college so the classes are well small and go by rather quickly, lots of freedom. but this animation class that's based around macromedia flash is terrible.
when people talk about getting certificates in gaming design and character animation i'm pretty sure 10 years ago it wasn't totally entwined with web development, there's no course in this city or school district that's about real 2D animation where you use paper + pen + paint + cels. seriously, the entire curriculum takes place in front of a computer! if i want to get a real 2D animation immersion i would have to go to uni which'd require taking out an insane loan or spending all of the money ive saved for a decade..
i just dont like the handling of objects, keyframes, tweening and motion tweening, shape tweening... it sucks. MASKS. all the boxes, etc. i like that shit for making beats but not really for visual art. (and this class is REQUIRED)

Learn CSS + HTML Then Move on to Php + Mysql Check out some other new languages (Ajax + Ruby) Then think about learning flash if you have not got any beer handy and are bored.

after 3 years on a so called DESIGN degree and not doing very much i realised i had completed the course, got a 2/1 and not very much else other than a big loan to pay back.
my biggest lesson in all of this mess is to just get on with it. if you really want to learn something hands on and creative then do it yourself, an institution sure as hell wont give you the answers you are looking for.
so in conclusion, Flash is amazing to work in if you know what you want to do. There are loads of resources for Flash such as Flashkit.com, but If your really struggling, then i would recommend After Effects for its more orthodox approach to keyrames and filters.

Flash is a tool, a very good one. You can do a lot with it. If you don't like it, or don't understand it.. I don't know... what do you want to do again?

Dood if u can master flash then u'll be able to translate ideas to screen very proficiently - kinda like how when u get good at translating that melody in yer head to music software

hexane: if you look at someones site like yugop though, i mean you can still tell that its FLASH, even tho he's a fucking master of it. is there a 2D animation medium on pc's/macs that's really not object-based and is really all about flowing stuff from frame-to-frame?
jivverdicker: nonsense- the mayan calender ends so long before that

I think almost all animation for cartoons, and well, most animation in general is done using vector graphics now, perhaps not flash, but the same concepts. Paper, pen, paint and cels dont have a big place in animation anymore as is my understanding. If you really dont like the handling of objects, keyframing and tweening, then dont do them. Make each frame a keyframe and just draw for each frame. I've no idea why you would want to do that though, those features are very handy when used well.

In 2004 i set up a huge cel animation machine for the film school i used to go to. And a six plate 16mm cutting board that was a fucking monster.
I don't think anyone has ever used it yet but we planned this short film that was so close to being created, but my associate was then hired to work in television so it never happened. I'm too very interested in doing real non flash hands on animations, and as far as i know there is'nt any real software solution to it yet..

Oh, and i decided to follow my intuition and started up my own production company a few months ago! Right now i'm only doing illustration work but i've included animations in my future-business-plan so, hopefully! :)

hahah word it even has clip art abilities! ceri jc: thanks! and yes! cygnus: you can probably hook up a decent cel system with a little imagination, get good enough to do a reel or something, and send it to the appropriate institutions/producers. just do something or you'll probably regret it later :)
