[bad spam] Ambient Techno

Becuase I find productive work such a bind, I often find
myself tinkering with all my musical hardware (a laptop),
searching to find the essence of Ambient Techno. It
has eluded me for over 10 years. It continues to elude me.
But now and again, I say "enough", and let the bastard sons
of cheap soundcards and cheaper software run loose, that
they might find happiness. These are just three of their
stories.

1). Ambient Techno

2). (Party like it's)1993

3). Fair Light

1 is awesome, and probably the best track I've heard from
you. The next two tracks may also contain something that
will make this statement void as they may be better. For
some reason, and I've never really "felt" this before,
but... I feel lik this track has some real proper
progression to it even though it stays the same

2 the synth/sound/whatever is awesome! that sound, you know
which one. This is one of those weird party tracks that
would get me out dancing after a few tequila shots (though,
after a few tequila shots, I'd dance to Avril Lavigne). It
needs to be longer.

3 made me go isn't this a boards of canada track before the
first second was over, but it isn't really enough of a track
for me to be able to say anything. it clips going out.

I just listened to this, and it's sounding pretty fucking
good in my ears actually. Mind you, i'm in a good mood,
drunkish, and i've cooked with a girl who digs squarepusher,
so this might colour my review of this.

I love short tracks, but i'd love the 1'st one to be longer.
It could go on for a long time, evolve, small changes in the
melody lines and so forth. The quite brilliant bassline ties
the whole thing together.

(this post is only about the first track)

It's times like these I regret being such a spiteful shit.

I also just came to the conclusion that clipping is the
digital equivalent of dust crackles and pops of 20th Century
vinyl.

You all have lovely ears, and lovely little faces too, I
bet.

great stuff, d_b. ambient techno is deep, i've had it on
loop for ages... your best yet. 1993: funny, loved the
detuned synth. fair light was deceptive, what i thought a
sly pause before it really kicked in was actually the end...
you could have made it into something as good as the first
track, but still, it's altogether the best music i've heard
on here in a long time, and i'd buy it if i saw it, even
with all that price label residue

Love the tracks and their respective titles. Ambient Techno
is very spacious and resonant.. I love the oblique
references to dated sound palettes.. something I like to
think I'm attunded to. It's a tough balancing act trying to
get the elements to gel without it becoming forced or
'retro'.. which would be an easy mistake when you're dealing
with this kind of subject matter. There's this one synth
sound that you use that I've always liked, especially
drowned in reverb, but I don't know the name of it.. hits at
1:56 and kind of bubbles up at other places. Very nice..
Mmm!!

I'd start bitching about the clipping but you've already
prefaced its usage, so I'm okay with it :) I don't hear the
pause+kick that horsefactor descibed in the last track
though, did I download a truncated version (35 secs)?
Anyway, great work, once again...!

P.S. 1993 must be some sort of a totemic year for us, as
this shit I made in high school will attest to (very
bottom of the page).

The other day, I was listening to some modern "microhouse"
on Boomkat (can't remember who it was by- someone I'd not
heard of before) and it sounded like someone had done a
clone of Jeff Mill's "The Bells" using Reaktor's presets (on
reflection, that's probably how it was done). Ambient Techno
does the same sort of "heard it before, but in a good way"
trick, but I can't work out what it is that it sounds like.

(Party like it's) 1993 is probably my least favourite one,
but the morphing cat-like synth is quite interesting.

"Fair Light" could be off Pycho's next album.

Best sound of the "EP"? It's a toss up between the kick drum
on Ambient Techno and the way the cat-synth at the end of
1993 clips and sounds like a snare.

Suffer no longer the ignominy of listening to sub-par
128kbps mp3s and lose yourself in the luxury of the

Though I'm not 100% sure it makes all that much difference

You mentioning Pycho (quite rightly, though that track was a
nod to a bit of Fairlight noodling found only at the very
end of Frankie Goes to Hollywood's "Power of Love" Cassette
single (true)), did you see Tycho's back, under a new
guise?

Ha ha, 75 hand made copies? Loooooser. My cd is 100 handmade
copies. Hence 25% better.

I can guess the masmod bio (included in the EP) timeline
goes like this then:

Debute as a shameless BoC clone->
Deny any knowledge of BoC or their music->
Continue to make BoC soundalikes and steal their style and
imagery wholesale->
Concede that a "friend made me a tape" with some BoC on and
that you were inspired by it->
Once you've achieved a reasonable level of fame and been
signed to several "small idm labels" (TM), gradually drop
the BoC aesthetic and change your sound->
Finally make your own music and get it noticed by the fame
generated by the whole "Tycho" elaborate marketing scheme.

Really, it seems the parallels between Tycho and Pycho are
closer than first expected.

Should be available to buy fairly shortly (on Spunktronics).
I've just been asked to remaster a couple of the tracks
before it's released, but once that's done, it should be a

These tracks are "ok". They seem short compared to others
I've heard of yours and slight bit more generic. I was
hoping that (Party Like It's) 1993 was going to be something

Still, saved to playlist.

Ambient Techno
very cool track, shame i can't crank the volume up
(everyone's in bed) so it's difficult for me to hear the
bassline, but i like this one muchly

(Party like it's) 1993
i like the lead-line melody the comes in, but seems kind of
short? any plans to expand this one?

Fair Light
this is my favorite, i like the pad sound a lot, and the
minimal drums. i always end up overpowering a track with
drums, which is a weakness with my music sometimes i think.

i hope that my annoying you with the cake doesn't make my
comments here any less sincere.

for all the hardware i've got, you are right - i haven't got
much output to show for it. but the situation i'm in doesn't
allow me to create much except for the scant track that's
badly recorded on a memo cassette recorder when the
girlfriend's parents are out of the house (because they
can't stand the racket)

Ambient Techno is fucking quality. Without doubt this is
your finest music yet. Three times longer and it's a
classic. Fucking lovely.

Party like it's... didn't really hit me good. It's OK but a
bit middle of the road, anyone with a laptop, can produce.

Fair Light is another stormer. I really love this sort of
music. The synth is clipping a lot on my headphones...apart
from this it is staggeringly good. I have listened to it on
repeat for four.

Continue with this and Grinning Ape could indeed be a future
for music which has for far too long been left in the past.

This isn't more spam, I just added new B-Sides to the CD 2

Foxhole on the roof. Alright i guess, just doesnt do
anything special for me. I like the sawy synth that comes
in, but no. Nothing special. I don't wan't to listen to it
again.

Operation susie: I really like the beat. I just need more.
Seems to rough. The little riff is nice as an intro, but
personally (rambling here, bare with me) i'd let the drums
kick in after it, and then unleash that magical immortal
rich and unforgettable synthline that you have locked up in
your soul somewhere. I wouldnt even consider this a "track",
but i will consider it to be a fairly promising rough demo.

Mission briefs: the title and the sounds makes me think of
Devo, wich is nice. Sort of fun, but nah.

After this so so review, i relistened "ambient techno", just
to check if i was crazy for liking it the first time around.
I wasn't, it's still an ace track (albeit, it should be
longer), and probably some of the best stuff i've heard from
you. That and Sea world. It's the 2 tracks, where i've
really FELT the music, and what you where trying to do with
it.

As a general critique of you'r music, i can see that you're
trying to be minimal, but be carefull not to be too minimal
on stuff like melody lines and such. Try adding more stuff
to the tracks. Just little subtle stuff, that makes it all
magical. Like high pitch melody lines on top of the whole
deal. It would make it more emotinal. I'm not a native
english speaker, so im not capable of expressing exactly
what i feel you should do, but i hope you get my drift. And
anyway, fuck what i think. Do what you like.
