Who here has Reason? I just got it for my Macintosh G4
{thanks blue....} and I was wondering who here has it, and

I've got it, but it keeps asking me to insert a cd..uh which
my dog ate. Played around with the demo. The piano roll,
which is quite an important feature, sucks. It's like a
bigger Rebirth.

I know a good trick: connect the Drummachine to the
Subtractors so that it triggers the synths instead of the
samples. You can have a proper VA drummachine that way, it's
way more flexible than samples.

it.

Be sure to insert the mixer first, then the devices you put
in the rack will automaticly connect to it.

Paco, I believe you need to burn the big (508 MB)"Factory
Sound Bank.rfl" file to a CDR and label it SOUNDCD

Yeah or you can create a CD image of the Sound Bank and
mount it on your HD.

ya i use reason
im still just getting used to it.. and exploring various
features, etc..

it seems really cool, but i think thereis lots of space for
improvements.. a few little things about it are annoying

it would also be much better if i had a midi keyboard...
that way i could record melodies much more intuitively

ive been using reason for about a year and a half now, its
pretty darn cool i reckon. there are plenty of sites like
reasonstation.net, propellerheads.se with refills, tips and
tricks, plus tracks to download and fiddle about with. Ive
heard that reason 2 will have some pretty fly additions
(like audio recording). I use it exclusively now (got rid of
my synths and samplers). With a copy of cubase, you can wire
up the elements in any way you can think of and use any
plugin effect/synth too. Also, Ive never had a crash from
using just reason, which makes it quite unique in my
experience of music software =)

You got rid of your synths and samplers for SOFTWARE?! Ouch.
I would just use them in conjunction with each other.

do u use a midi keyboard (or other controller instrument)
with it?
how hard are they to set up, and do u know of any good ones?

offline Dialect Falx from New Bern (United States) on 2002-03-12 02:31 [#00122077]
Points: 186 Status: Lurker

any keyboard will do that has midi in/out. you will probably
want to invest in a knob board if you're going to use reason
though. they're rather easy to set up.

offline hexagonaldope on 2002-03-12 02:35 [#00122079]

dialectX- it took a while to get used to it, but it wasnt
practical having lots of electrical gear about with two kids
running round. I sample stuff mainly anyway, and its nicer
using samples in reason than a hardware sampler. I enjoy the
challenge of just using software, i find it pushes me to be
more creative.

AMinal- I use a midikeyboard and peavey 16 fader controller.
Any midi keyboard will work fine, and there are lots of midi
controllers available now (phatboy etc). You just need a
midi box for your computer, there are plenty about- are you
using mac or pc?

u mean one with knobs so u can record their movements?
like, to control different parameters?

yeah midi keyboars are all more or less the same, unless you
spend upwards of $200 (u.s.d.)
but you don't really need a knob board unless you're gonna
do it in real time, personally i do most of my automation
(and sequencing for that matter) on reasons master sequencer
- you can specifically draw out the changes which is a
helluvalot better than knob twiddling (again: unless you're
doing real time shit or live p.a.s)

offline Dialect Falx from New Bern (United States) on 2002-03-12 02:39 [#00122084]

Yes aminal. And I guess its just me, but I think sequencing
an entire song destroys or takes away any feeling you put
into the song.

im on PC

also, how does ReWire work?
what exactly does it let you do?

offline diemax from somewhere in tennessee :( (United States) on 2002-03-12 02:40 [#00122087]
Points: 2040 Status: Lurker

true.... but i can hook reason up to my gear if i need to-
and the only realtime shit that ever adds anything to MY
music is mostly velocity related- which i can either do in
realtime, or do PERFECTLy with the mastersequencer

offline hexagonaldope on 2002-03-12 02:40 [#00122088]

the best feature in reason is the dr rex recycle player-
this has so many possibilities, but id advise you to not use
the built in loops - theyre crap, sample your own stuff,
lots of websites/p2ps for hetting samples - breaks etc. you
can load a break into 1 dr rex, then copy the notes it
produces onto a synth track and transfer the feel or groove
of the break onto a bassline or something

offline diemax from somewhere in tennessee :( (United States) on 2002-03-12 02:41 [#00122089]

rewire lets you run a whole bunch of plugins or whatever at
the same time- it's like a much better mixer than the one on
your taskbar

rewire allows you to send audio from any synth, dr rex,
sampler etc into its own channel in cubase. so you can use
vst effects rather than the crummy reason fx.

i see the "controller lane" but i dont know how to actually
draw in it!

simple it's the little blue envelope and the 3 icons to the
right of it show you how you select your lanes
you can have as many controller lanes as there are knobs on
the device your using, and to pick a specific knob right
click it and go to "edit automation"

got it?

diemax , most of my selfcontained reason files would be
about 30-40 megs, cos i mostly use my own samples, so mp3s
are better, unless its for a remix/collaboration
