or were you just unexplainably compelled to do it?

I downloaded loads of music programs and VSTs that enabled
me to replicate Autechre and Aphex badly.

unexplainably compelled to do it. mind you, if it wasn't
music, it would have been writing or drawing or video stuff.
It's a love-hate relationship of course, especially as it
involves the opinions of other people, which aren't always
positive. i suppose you could just make music for yourself,
but that's a bit like masturbation: it's not as good as the
real thing, which involves sharing the experience with other
people.

it was a natural progression from making noise.

Although I've taught myself some relatively difficult piano
pieces, this electronic music thing seems so out of reach. I
don't know how some of the people on this board do what they
do in this field. I just wouldn't know where to start, what
to use, or what to do. But I'll get into it sooner or later,
I suppose.

my bro made music for ages. then i started using fruity
loops and made a simple (crap) beat and was like 'FUCK this
fun'.
since then ive just been doing stuff sending it to friends.
im not very experimental or anything but everynow and then
i'll try simple things that are totally new to me.
ivebeen doing stuff for year or so, and ivebeen gradually
getting better, so it only makes sense to keep doing stuff.

i studied violin and piano, then quit, then after 5 years of
not playing i decided to record ('Spoken Word') parts of
school textbook which i modified using razor and pen, then i
remembered that there is a piano standing in the dining room
and i know aaa bit about it and i have 2 tape recorders to
do overdubs (didn't know this word then) and so i started to
record smth, recalling how to play piano, learning guitar,
singing and drumming on everything and so on and SO ON.
years passed and i met computers. years passed and I even
bought one.

My friend noticed that I started taking a liking to
electronica and sent me some midi maker program. It was a
shit little music maker but I got the jist of it and
downloaded FL3 in 2002. Still use it today, haven't even
upgraded to 6. I can do anything with FL3.

I was a big a fan of avantgarde music and noise and I
decided that I could easily make some noise myself, just for
fun. Then I realized how pretentious and boring the music
was and some nice people thaught me the ways of techno and
braindance.

From that point I just kept making tracks over and over
again for a year and a half to learn what everything(reverb,
delay, eq, compressor, synths, bla bla) did, then I read
some theory and after a while I got interested in vintage
gear. Here I am today, still just a nobody on the internet.

:D

Me and a mate just messing around with soundrecorder in
windows. We realised we could make music with it and just
sort of took it from there. Then I got a demo of Re-birth on
a magazine cover and that blew our minds.

I took up the challenge to see if somebody with no musical
ability whatsoever could create the best record in the
world.

What I didn't factor in, all those years ago at the start,
was a debilitating sense of utter hopelessness. Still, as
Beckett wrote "I can't go on, I'll go on" to which I'd add,
"I mean, you might as well".

i got into electronic music in the days of fruityloops 1 and
rebirth because i got sick of playing in bands. ie,
rehearsals, unreliabilaty etc.

Excatly the same as ceri!!! only i got Cooledit. My first
years of electronic music i didnt have a sequencer at all, i
strictly used cooledit, so it was some pretty fucked up
music. Eventually got Fruityloops wich i use to this date,
and love it.

Also, i've always as a child been put of by the music
lessons in school. I actually thought music was boring as
fuck (as a subject) but when i was about 14 i think, i
listened to the prodigy for the first time and it blew me
away. Then i listened to Aphex, and it blew me completely
away. I never understood how he created the sounds, and
like, the TECHnology behind the music. I guess i was sort of
curious of that as well.

i was lying in bed one night, half awake, and in the
shadows, i saw something move. i was startled, jumped and
wanted to shout out "what the fuck was that?" but, maybe it
was the fear, maybe it was the state of mind, i instead
blurted out "what the beat?"

and the dream was born

Commodore VIC*20 -- i always liked beeps! but around 1998
is when i found the DOS app Impulse Tracker and started to
write beats - have been playing bass for 12 years too,
mostly in the same band from high school

i had piano and cornet lessons when i was a nipper but found
the whole process of practicing scales etc to get grades
boring and so quit. i started messing with a saxaphone and
guitar as well but never got anywhere with them and so kind
of gave up on making music. when i was 15 i ran away from
home and ended up living with my cousin for a bit who,
having already introduced me to some awesome music when i
was younger, broadened my horizons even further and i got
into making loops with field recordings and eventually
instruments moving on to FL a few years ago. at 23 I am now
attending music college and am so broke i cant even afford a
midi controller or to pay my rent. music sucks.
