A Second Listening

Well, here is a list of music that I, for one reason or
another, didn't pay the appropriate attention to the first
time around:

Placebo - Meds
Not that bad of an album after all, but not an excellent
one either. I'm not that disgruntled over purchasing this
record as I was originally. Hopefully this band can pull it
together and release a proper album next time around.
"Follow The Cops Back Home" is a nice little track.

Aphex Twin - Chosen Lords
Oh yes. I like this. When I first listened to it, I
wasn't blown away, so I quickly put it at the bottom of my
list of things to lavash attention on. But now I find it to
be very involving, causing me to pay attention to the
nuances which there are plenty of. Judging by the material
selected for this compilation, I think the entire series is
definitely something I have got to get my hands on, or at
least decent MP3s of.

Schoenberg/Webern/Berg - Schoenberg: Piano Concerto . Webern
. Berg
Ah, serial/twelve-tone music--it's been a long battle,
but I think I'm winning. The Berg piece is the easiest to
get into, with all its romanticism. I don't know if this
music is a novelty like a lot of modern art music, but it's
beginning to make an impact...I suppose...

John Dowland - In Darkness Let Me Dwell
Beautiful songs. I implore everyone to give this man's
music at least a single listening. The title track and Flow
My Tears are the stand-outs, Come Again is artfully amative.
These songs have more gloom-and-doom and suggestive lyrics
than most modern songs do. Not bad for 300+ year old music.

Anyone else currently giving some music a much belated
second spin?

Change your mind on anything?

i often change my mind yes. sometimes i like something
instantly and it fades away after a few listens or the other
way around.

Schoenberg and Webern are my two favorite composers.. I'm
glad you gave them a second chance. It's extremely
difficult to take at times, and doesn't encourage repeat
listens very often, but it is brilliant work. Webern
especially is astounding in his powerful conciseness and
attention to timbre.

Haven't gotten as much into Alban Berg.. like you said, a
little too romantic at times, but still miles ahead of many
of his colleagues.

hm, don't change my mind about music really often. sure,
sometimes things grow, but shit usually stays shit. like
placebo in general e.g., god, that annoying voice... ;P.
one example maybe would be diamond head's "lightning to the
nations"... didn't do much for me at first listen, then i
came to love the bonus track "diamond lights" then "it's
electric" then the title track then "helpless" then it
turned to be my favourite nwobhm record of all time.
as for dodecaphony/ 12 tone music... i think it kinda turned
out as a dead end, pretty similar to the philosophic
thoughts of adorno and the like, who pushed it alot.
historically important non the less and a lot of good works
were achieved but i also prefer the stuff that allows itself
some romantic moments for contrast / utilises the
"emancipation of atonality" for narrational structures
instead of being the sake of itself. i pretty much like
wozzeck e.g.

man, that "meds" album is just shit. they went steadily
downhill after the second album - they had said everything
they could really say and have just been repeating
themselves over and over and over again.

and the "special edition" was just ridiculous, what a
completely bloated affair. "including documentary about the
making of the album by that bloke from Trainspotting" - 10
minute featurette, more like.

oh look, they've rereleased the first album with demos and..
a dvd! sadly the first album wasn't that great, either. not
falling for that "special edition" shit anymore.

that said - the last thing I can think of that I really
reappreciated was "Lost and safe" by The Books.

Massive Attack - Mezzanine

I bought it because i sort of liked teardrop, but i thought
the rest was shit. Didnt listen to it that much, then one
day, maybe a year later, i whipped it on and realized how
some of the tracks are brilliant. Then i stopped listening
to it again, and then the same happened, like a year later i
listened to it again, and got into some of the other tracks
on the album.

It's indeed a very very good album this one, i can see that
now.

Chosen Lords is different than Analord? Why not just say
Analord?

Yeah, it is shit, but it's somewhat listenable shit.
somewhat
I'm a sucker for halfway decent production values and
falsetto singing. Having a few catchy songs doesn't hurt
either, but Molko's lyrics will always be awkwardly lame.
And I also don't want to feel like I threw my cash away on
this thing. I didn't! This album is worth at least half of
what I paid for it. At least. At least?
