"Genre is more than a formal constraint; it is an essential component of making meaning"
My girlfriend is working on a paper in university for her rhetoric class. I read the before mentioned quote, and thought it was worth making a post about. Let the flaming begin.

no need to flame..I think this is coming from more of a semiotics..narrative study POV..this is genrally used for visual arts..Genre study has been done predominantly in Cinema...where the unifying motifs become visual shorthand..but the fun begins when these visual cues are used by auteurs to bend, subvert and reinvent genres...

quareling over genres is the most boring thing there is. if you don't like them don't, vice versa.

Big difference between a quarell and a discussion. If you don't like discussions, what are you doing in a music messageboard?

complaining that genres shouldnt exist is silly. we make words for everything. maybe you cant universally describe music in words but its just for convenience more than anything. I dont suppose its essential to have genres but for it to have not happened would be absurd, i think

well im not here to quarell genres though i like nitpicking over them ones in a while. but it makes a lame discussion subject is what i think. lame and bad
genre is just a genre when enough people think so imo
so you have ebm (see wikipedia) which means song orientated industrial i think. but imo it's industrial. because when you use ebm you say the other industrial is like noise. but imo that's why there's the genre noise. when something is enough noisy it's noise.
end of discussion

You guys complain too much. I just posted this because I read my girlfriends paper, and thought it was relevant to a discussion that happens here practically ever week. I was hoping it would foster discussion, not bitching. I guess people would rather make up innane words that sound like autechre titles.
