Try something like the E-mu 1820M. That has 6 1.4" balanced inputs and 8 1/4" balanced outs.

e-mu have some laptop versions of their cards, but they usually don't have breakout boxes then...
I'm not sure about your 1/4" thing.. do you mean you need it to have small jacks?

If I had the money, I would go with a MOTU interface. Second would be the presonus firepod that xceque linked to. I bought an Alesis Multimix12 firewire because I need a mixer for live use, a multi channel audio interface, and I am not rich. It seemed like the most economical choice, even though I will probly need to upgrade in a few years. But its a solid mixer.

the breakout box is the extrenal box you often get with soundcards these days, but I see now that I was mixing stuff up a bit.. the emu laptop soundcard does indeed have a breakout box. It's the emu 1616...

there is no delay, latency, from being external, not more then internal. you always have delay. m-audio's, and others, soundcards have good asio, that means little delay

actually the delay is from the computer computing

The difference is going to be negligable with higher end stuff. Generally with music stuff, you get what you pay for. That is considering that you are using the right kind of computer for your audio interface.

pci, I'm assuming, is internal?
I really don't think I need too many OUTS.. just need to have my monitors hooked up.. but more than 2 inputs is very important
the latency issue.. if you get a SC above a certain qua;lity standard, you're saying, the latency will be unnoticable
when I hear 'latency' I think of the delay time from a USB midi controller to the computer.. which is NOTHING like this right?

pci is internal, yes, but it's for desktops. for a laptop, I guess internal is like those cards you stick into the side..
latency is delay from when a sound is produced to when it is recorded and goes for both midi and audio. latency is almost always noticeable if it's above 10ms (though mostly only when you play back what you just recorded, you'll hear it missing the beat, etc), but you can usually set the program to compensate for it...
