before xlt reset, (in not so many words) we were discussing how Autechre's mastery of midi set's them apart from others and how their sound is "futuristic" or "otherworldly," but fundamentally basic in its utilization of midi to the fullest extent.

perhaps, or it could be one of those things where it is so efficiently basic and flawless it opens itself open for above average amounts of interpretation. Don't get me wrong, I'm not hating, I adore the Ae as much as you. I'm just saying...

well i think the majority of it's time, the way the listener perceives certain sounds and sequences and mixing two of them to create really fucked up rhythms and counterrhythms...
on the subject of time, it took the time nearly 5billion years to produce an autechre. the autechre took less than 15 years to fuck time over, isnt that awesome

yeah, that's cool. Especially, when you disregard an entire history of music and technology. ;-)
I'm sorta punching myself in the face as I sit here listening to myself half heartedly insinuating that Ae isnt great. That's not true. They're fucking rad and represent a pinnacle of computer audio.
BUTttttttt......... it was bound to happen by someone. When I start to get a better idea about what they are doing in some tracks, a particularly odd thing happens- They become demystified, and yet my respect increases for them, as I come to terms with the hard work that goes into a particular process/track. I think the lack of distinction between process and track is particularly interesting actually.
Anyways, yes they are truly jedis, but I feel if they werent around, someone else would quite possible be making tracks in a parallel universe that would come to represent the same thing.

What processes are you hearing that you can understand and describe? I mean, aside from granular synthesis, morphing via spectral analysis, quantization of pseudo-random event sources, regular resynchronization of out-of-time periodicities, and probabilistic interpolation between two or more sequences. I would like to know.

resynchronization is true. Cool trick. I wonder how the do it. Also short delays perhaps? Midi can't handle that speed of repeats.
