Hi hello and love to all

I had an idea a little while ago that I'd try and put a
microphone in the window (I live on the 7th floor above a
busy street) and hook it up to this pedal thingie that I can
use to loop the input (although it loops it in reverse) and
then I'd see what became of it, if the sound of the cars and
people and building ventilation systems would just produce
pure static or if something would gradually emerge if I just
let it go and layer more and more sound on top of itself.

It didn't produce static, and the results were actually
quite interesting (imo), and I thought it may be a nice idea
to ask other people to attempt the same thing and see what
they got out of it.. so if anyone has the possibility (a mic
and something that can loop continually.. a delay pedal or a
tape loop or something), I'd love to hear what your
surroundings sound like if they are looped on top of
themselves.

good one! not entirely what I originally thought of, but
still good.. could quite possibly make a good background for
a track!

in for good measure.

I love the sounds of the outside-world. I'd happily listen
to an album consisting of cars driving by, scattered
conversations, the sounds of a street... maybe with soft
reverb to give it that lazy-day ethereal quality. I think
it's one of the reasons I love Chill Out by the KLF so much
-- those rumbling trains just reduce me.

Interesting how the loops build up into high pitched
feedback kinda sounds rather than static.

I tried recording people walking and talking once with this
awesome directional mic my cousin brought by (he was doing
sound for a movie).. I could direct it at a point on the
street and hear footsteps and cars driving by, etc.. it was
awesome! I decided against using the recordings, though
(except for the ambience and footsteps) because.. well, I
wouldn't want anyone who's a complete stranger to me to
record me talking on the street and put it in a song...

yeah.. I've done a few of these now (only recorded this one)
and they don't necessarily even end up with a tone like
that.. it could just go to static, or it could go completely
into the "washing machine" sound that all the recordings get
(probably because of the length of the loop). In the first
one it turned into something that sounded like crickets
rather than feedback...

hafler trio does a lot of this sort of thing. he actually
posted that link in the h3o mailing list, saying that it was
just like the release 'mastery of money' except for 1
difference.

that looks great! the samples sound quite a bit more melodic
than what I've managed to get so far as well...

heh, it's quite nice, but I think you did something
different from what my awesome drawing illustrated (ha!)..
the loops should kind of be layered on top of each other...

I know futureimage did one that also went missing in the
restoration process, does anyone know the link?

and.. did anyone else do anything?

yeah, i did that in the first place...which lead to complete
mayhem and chaos - too many cars were going in the bkgd,
heh, so i decided to make it again, with changed pattern of
the sample channels - they were on top of each other, but
not all at once - so the samples could be heard

your drawing was very awesome indeed

I know, as soon as I heard the plane, I just grinned.

The kids are weird too, I hoped they'd start playing. They
are now.
