widescreen or normal aspect ratio?

decided i'm going to buy a flatscreen monitor. i've been
using a 17" widescreen on my laptop for the past 3 years,
i'm wondering whether i should get a widescreen or normal
ratio 19" flatscreen for this new computer..?

what are the advantages and disadvantages of both?

all i can think of is the fact that if i watch sopranos on a
normal aspect ratio monitor, there'll be bigggg black bands
at the top and bottom. but what about actually *using* the
PC?

there are no particular disadvantages to using
widescreen compared to a normal 4:3 screen.. as you say,
with movies, etc, there are black lines top and bottom if
the screen is 4:3 and the movie is 16:9, and I'd guess if
you want to keep a proper aspect, there'd be black lines
left and right if you watch 4:3 on a 16:9 (though I've never
actually seen this.. most people seem to not mind the
stretching, and just use the "stretch" function of their
screens). However, there is probably going to be more 16:9
content than 4:3 content these days.. anyway, all other
stuff, like programs, have no set aspect ratio, so they'll
adapt, so.. yeah, go with 16:9.

cool buzz. and yeah, i've had those black stripes at the
sides on my laptop.. so yeah, why not. 16:9 it is. and it'll
look good too.

cropping the video in vlc takes care of the black bars from
the sides of 4:3 files, which is pretty nifty if you are
into that shit

Widescreen for sure. It can be a bit crappy with some games,
but the benefits far outweigh the cons.

You'd never go back to a 4:3 TV after buying a widescreen TV
afterall :)

And yeah like Mr. Vlari says, many of the better media
players allow you to stretch/crop the display so that it
fits onto a widescreen display without side bars. Media
Player Classic is a good one, and VLC works well too. Most
TV/movie media is widescreen these days, so it makes sense
to watch it in the native format. Just be careful, because
many monitors are actually 16:10 instead of the standard
16:9, so some stretching is still gonna occur.

My current laptop I've had for about a year is widescreen.
I'm certainly not going to go back.

Thats the contrast ratio, silly :)

For contrast, higher is generally better.

but don't expect too much from lcds; lcds have the worst
contrast.
