Can electric guitars/basses be run through racks as a
substitute for a keyboard?

Also, for software, can an electric guitar work as a midi
controller?

I hate dickweeds who play the guitar like they are having
sex, monkey-style. I'm not saying that you are one of these
types. I'm saying people should play instruments to make
music, not because they want to improve their image.

If you want to control a synth with a guitar just cuz it
"looks manlier" then you probably haven't given much thought
to why keyboards have been used in the first place for the
last 30 years. You'd have to be a ridiculous(-ly good)
guitarrist to be able to play some of the stuff you can do
on a synth with average technique. But the matter of
creating the sound is only part of the problem, sustain is
an issue as well. A guitar string eventually stops vibrating
(and thus stops sending signal) but a key can be held down
indefinately. I'm not saying that workarounds to these
problems could not eventually be created, but all the same
there is a method to the madness, so to speak. <3

Right!
The problem: U have to be in tune at a very high precission
level. Slow response. Looks horrendous to some.

TonePort, or some LINE 6 program does that I think. I don't
know.

Boss makes a bass synthesizer that doesn't need a midi
pickup, it analyzes frequencies. You can use it on drum
machines and shit too.

Google: Boss SYB3 or SYB5

You want a synth that allows you to strut round a stage like
you're a God, rather than hunched over in the corner?

You need a Keytar. Sh-101 is good (the arpeggiator means you
don't even have to be able to play to get good sounds).
Sadly, I think there's only one is production at the moment
and it's a toy Yamaha one.

Another option is using an ebow and a filter pedal. I have
the ebow, I am just waiting for my frostwave resonator to
come through in the mail.

Aren't frostwave the lot who do that wonderful MS-20 filter
clone?

roland makes the gi 20, if I remember correctly.... I had
one for about an hour and then returned it. I think roland
made a couple of versions of it. I had the one that was just
the pick up and midi interface. I wanted to record playing
my guitar through midi and then have it trigger my synths.

But like zephyr twin was talking about, the motion of a
guitar string, made it a huge problem. I had a fairly good
guitar that stayed in tune well but even playing really
short durations the synths would flutter around the note you
were holding and of course that would also make the midi
info in the computer flutter too. Sustained notes were
always fluttered even with the pick up sesitivity level
adjusted.

Pretty much just crap, at least the one I tried, hope this
helps

sorry paL :)

Squarepusher sequenced his pre-2000 work on a Boss DR-660
drum machine, which wasn't designed to sequence entire
songs. He uses hardware for his electronic music such as
King Tubby-style spring reverbs and Akai samplers (S950 for
early work, S6000 for later work). Around the year 2000,
Squarepusher bought a computer with Reaktor and an Eventide
Orville for digital processing. He has been known to play
Fender and Warwick basses. Squarepusher claims to know more
about his music equipment than the manufacturers of the
products themselves.

not much, dude. overall the text just reminds me of the fact
that he plays bass, which i already know. i still don't know
more about HOW he uses the bass in his music-making

but thanks for the copy/paste effort anyway

uh, actually, yes it does. In fact it almost completely
applies, except for the monkey-sex part. I didn't mean to
come off harsh (I like you, I swear), I was just trying to
present the obvious truths.

I am more familiar with a guitar than a keyboard. Also,
decent keyboards are more expensive than a guitar which
would "feel" as good, relatively.

Global Goon also plays the bass, I believe. I was thinking
of someone else who does earlier, but I forgot who.

you should set it real close to the strings
anyway: there's latency, that sucks
