How much personality adjustment is normal?

On one end of the spectrum, you have the social chameleon,
which has a different personality according to who he's
talking with. This person is often conceived as being
superficial, with no true personality.

On the other side, you have the almost autistic person with
no empathy or ability to see things from other people's
perspective. This person will often seem cold and arrogant.

What do you think is the normal amount of personality
adjustment?

there is no "normal", really. i'd prefer it if people were
civil most of the time, but i hate it when they act like
they're interested when they're just trying to be accepted.
most of the time it's ridiculously transparent.

i sometimes worry that i change too much when im with
different people, but hey what can you do, if i tried more
to 'be myself' I'd probably tell everyone to fuck off and
then come home and watch tv

situation.

be yourself

there is no real me: only an entity, something illusory. And
though I can hide my cold gaze, and you can shake my hand
and feel flesh gripping yours and maybe you can even sense
our lifestyles are probably comparable... I simply am not
there.

when you say "don't be an asshole" together with "be
yourself," I'm assuming you're saying you shouldn't
try to be an asshole, but what if you're yourself and
people percieve you as an asshole?

I only adjust according to respect for the people I'm with,
btw, and that means being truthful and considerate over
being polite or civil.

this 'be yourself' catchphrase is horrible, and i don't
think it applies to anything. if you have to tell people....

DM: If you're yourself and people perceive you as an
asshole, then I suppose you are an inherent asshole. Which
is too bad. Tact is the key, really.

I don't think it's unusual to change a bit, particularly
when dealing with people in a professional capacity. If I
tell a friend, "Well, basically it's fucked." they
appreciate the honesty. If I told a client that that, I'd be
out of a job.

I don't think I change my behaviour much amongst my
friends/family though. Even among different circles of
friends with different interests I behave pretty much the
same, even if we talk about different things.

BTW Good adverts.

A lot of people that can undergo uncanny transformations
depending on who they're with and where, it brings them
success. I've never been able to do this and it sucks for
me... I can't seem to adjust my sense of humor or project
the right demeanor for the occasion. When I'm ''trying to be
nice to people'', I think my body language and minute
facial expressions give me away that I'm very uncomfortable.
My only mode is ''aloof'', which I think people perceive as
some sort of rudeness for some reason.

truth > politeness

being polite is the stupidest form of relieving yourself of
responsibility and people should be prepared to hear the
truth. conditioning is required.
