Can't we just end the term "IDM" please?

I'm so fuckin' tired of this title, it's just behind "Happy
Hardcore" as the lamest genre name. I'm embarassed to speak
it outloud.

Let's just kill it right here... how about "expiermental
electronica?" that does the music justice and goes back to
the roots.

i use electronica, but people who have no clue thinks im
listening to trance and such. but then again, people who
have no clue is not normally the people i socialize with.
but then again, a nice girl sometimes gets confused in
genres............ argh..

DONT KNOW/DONT CARE

in true IDM style, IDM doesn't actually stand for
"intelligent dance music" and it doesn't stand for anything
else for that matter. it is merely an
autechre-track-name-style meaningless acronym that can be
associated with this style of music.

When I talk to someone about music I call it ''electronic
music like Autechre and Aphex Twin'' and I hope whomever I'm
talking to is familiar with them. This rules out that I may
be talking about Darude or something. Although it's not
really a bad move to just outright call it IDM, that's a
conversation piece.

I tend to say electronica, in fact I forgot the term IDM
until I discovered this forum, IDM seems to say that all
other dance music is dumb, which isn't the case.

mustache by now.

you were 10 years old when 'I care because you do' was
released. you were in the 4th grade. you still thought
girls were yucky. you still made turkey drawings out of
your handprint for thanksgiving. you still slept with a
teddy bear. you still had recess. you would debate with
your friends about whether santa was your parents. you
couldn't get into PG-13 movies without mom but that didn't
matter because The Lion King was rated 'G.' the term "IDM"
was just 2 years old, and even though you had never heard of
it, you would someday grow to hate it.

but seriously though, every time one of these threads pop
up, I say the same thing:

I just tell people it's electronica, but note that it's not
to be confused with club/dance music.

I'm all for ending the term IDM. I just don't have any idea
how to erase it from all published/internet media and force
people to stop saying it.

by the way, it helps to listen to other types of music.

That way, when you say electronica, and it crashes and burns
just like it always does, you can also tell them you listen
to rock and hip-hop and you'll have the cd's to back it up.

well i break it down further and say " I listen to dub and
some other crazy shit like that" and then if you are asked
to play some I'd play Apheztwin Mangle Eleven

at least the general public has some sort of Idea what Dub
is. and it will blow them away when you destroy their
knowledge on what dub is changing their perspectives on
shit.

It was August of 1987. You were only 11, and already the
pressure was mounting. Your parents had decided that you
should join a little league baseball team. You were
overweight and your peers called you "Mayonasse." It hurt
but you pretended it didn't.

Snapping out of a daydream you realized the coach was
calling you. It was your turn up at bat. Earlier that day
you had picked a poppy and placed it behind your left ear.
You rubbed it for good luck. You stepped up to the plate,
akwardly holding your aluminum bat. You looked into the
stands and spotted your mother and father.

Your father was drinking. It was now or never. The young
pitcher began his wind-up. You tried your best to position
yourself. The moment the ball was released from the pitchers
hand, you took a furious swing, and the bat came flying out
of your hands. You hit another child in the head. He missed
3 days of school and recieved 7 stiches.

There were tears that day and on many days to come.

I think another problem is that there is so much diversity
in the IDM sound that you would need a name for AE's type of
sound APHEX sound (the pretty shit and a name for the
hardcore shit)
and break it all down further before we get anywhere with
any real worthy title for any of it.

I am sticking w/ Xltro
