i saw him on the daily show. i've heard his name in the past but never his music. I have to say, i don't care for him. the vocals sound very forced...is all of his work the same way or can someone direct me to his better works? I'm interested in hearing why people like him so much

I remember not caring for that performance too and I am a fan. Check out any of his Island records except Black Rider. Bone Machine's probably my favorite but it's a bit rougher than the rest. Rain Dogs has a bit of everything so I'd start with that. Can't really think of any ways to convince you to like him; you either enjoy his schtick or you don't.
Now wipe those salty tears from your eyes and enjoy a classic Tom Waits video. It's made of dreams I believe!
