i was wondering how you guyz do things in da process

- working with samples, drum machines, and software synths?
(all mouse)

- experimenting with soundz to distant lands, and composing
note by note on a midi synth?

- analogue machines?

- making your own robots, machines, and softwares to work
with you?

how do you blokes proceed? ohhh... didnt mean to forget the
ladies.

I start with one thing, then I do the next, and so forth and
so forth in that manner until I stop doing things to the
music.

I use anything at hand to make these massive, lush
soundscapes, and then I whittle them down and down and down
until they just sound like scratchy demos made by a very
irritable man as quickly as possible on cheap software
whilst waiting to go to the pub.

is the stuff you make what is normally referred to as
electro?

I'm just curious, 'cause I just figured out I don't know
what the term electro refers to...

electro is every music that's not made with instruments
working with electricity

Electro is a term that's been battered into meaningless, now
just signifying Electronic Music. But, for me, Electro is
early 80s Hip Hop but with a robotic, kratwerk influenced
thing. Afrika Bambaataa Planet Rock. Cybotron, Kid Frost,
all the old Electro compilations.

i just dunno, i do most of the things you listed, it's not
that conscious, it's quite spontaneous, i take sounds
recorded with my mic [like myself beatboxing or i tap mic
onto my desk lamp = which produces metallic sounds which i
use as drum sounds] or i take the cheese from under my toe
nails and throw it inside the acoustic guitar and check if
it sounds different or i try i out a vst-i or come up with
an idea for a track and try to find sounds to "paint" the
idea or i come up with a fancy title for a track like
"underwater bus to miami" and try to make a track that would
sound like a shit long bus trip on the ocean bottom

and fx, lots of fx, different configurations

experiment is the key word. experiment

i do it like this...video from my podcast.

the rest is just being bored of tv and noodling around with
a synth or MPC on my lap.

yeah, bambaataa is what I mainly associated with it.. and
ultramagnetic (ooooo, I really need to put that on right the
fuck now (critical beatdown)), but someone said
ultramagnetic wasn't electro... and I also had this notion
it could be like the stuff you make...

Well, if I recall correctly Ultramagnetic MCs appeared on
Streetsounds' Electro 16 compilation. There's a tracklisting
for all of them here. There's a bit of crossover,
I guess, in those early days, of rap and Electro and
whatever, I'm not an expert, at all. I guess all you could
say were some tracks were more Electro than others.

What I make's filed either under "Rubbish" or "Pig Sty
Techno" (depending on if it's someone else or me filing it).

i usually start with drums, and then layer stuff on top of
that

but more recently i've been starting out with melodies, and
it has brought fruitful things to the table

I generally start with a simple beat. Then I write some
sounds to go with it. I don't like wailing leads, I am
pretty much all about arps and drones. I love really deep
resonating sounds, and really plucky analog-ish basslines.
Generally, I start out with something that is basic hiphop,
and expand from there, adding a bunch of things and then
stripping them down, and then adding more things and
stripping them down.

I am trying to make things sound more organic right now. I
really like quiet music sometimes, and then sometimes I like
metal. It really depends on how good my week has been. It
really depends tho, because the times that I have had a good
week, I like to make broody music, and the times I have had
a bad week, I will make happy music.

im pretty frequently noodling on the
microKORG, and when i find a clever
melody, i usually think of complimen
tary rhythms, but i dont always have
my laptop around so i hold the melod
y until i can get into fl studio 5 & work
something out & then finalise th' track.

what blocks me right now is mixing in the good shit i get
out of the computer and the good shit i get out of my
hardware,i have good gear and i am retarded, i have no way
of recording them into my computer . my audio interface is
fucked up, my biggest block is like, "ok,i want to do this
loop. it will require this, this, this, and this", . like,
"the mp3 cd scratcher will be putting my noises into this
channel, with these plugins, and these knobs on the uc-33
will be on those plugins, and this real nasty beat will be
on this channel, and ill have that reverb snare, with the
knob controlling the reverb, but i want it to be gated," and
i sort of draw out this whole fuckin map of what i want to
do but can never just sitdown and do it without using meth
which i am currently out of

Wrong.

You should do what makes you productive. No rules or
restrictions generally makes for unfocused flabby sounding
music.
