This would be so cool / dangerous at the same time.

It would make AE impossible to listen to though.

Epilepsy but to audio instead of video.
Aural instead of visual.

Indeksical: I don't really know. If it was non-serious, you
could finally get people dancing to IDM

If someone has epilepsy they have to be careful at what they
watch/look at. Certain visual patterns will make them have
an epileptic fit.

epilepcy is a lot like you futureimage...not funny.

I believe more recent research has shown that it isn't the
visual patterns themselves creating the seizure, but rather
the stress it puts on your nerves. This stress is something
that can also be produced by sound or even quite possibly
weather (it's a bit speculative, but a swedish research
thing seems to have come up with certain results that
indicate the possible relation between for instance dry air
(supposedly meaning electrical charges don't discharge from
you if you build them up) or high pressure creating both
migraine and epileptic seizures)... Any kind of stress on
your body, both mental and physical could in theory induce
the seizure. It's not a "what if," but rather reality.

I know you meant it to be funny, but I found it a bit
tasteless, sorry.

No, serious, I didn't try to be funny. I thought it would be
really weird, but seeing as it can happen, that's really
fucked up. I'll see if I can find some cases where this has
actually happened.

:P I was only messing.

nah, I doubt it would be possible as the eyes are a lot more
sensitive as a receptor than ears.

I don't think it's just ears.. imagine you're at a concert
and standing near the speakers.. feel the bass throughout
your body. If that's not a lot of nerves firing at once, I
don't know what is...

offline ecnadniarb on 2006-09-04 10:18 [#01965019]

Actually I suppose it would be possible if you where
predisposed to seizures at particular frequencies...it would
be a lot more rare than visually induced seizues but
possible.

Mt Saint Michel+Saint Michael's Mount is what I think having
audio epilepsy would feel like

An average drill tune?

apparently, according to wikipedia, it's possible to get it
(or have increased chances of getting it) from sleeping,
waking up, tiredness, illness, constipation and
menstruation. nothing mentions visual impulses (or sound),
but I guess that all goes under neurological stress now...

hehe, I went to a John Foxx gig recently and the support
group, Rubicks (another good band), had a technical hitch.
The bassist triggered off what I guess was a sampler (they
use a lot of MPCs) and shitloads of bass went thru the PA
very loudly. I remember almost falling backwards and being
literally POUNDED by the bass. Maybe that was something
similar almost...

yeah, bass has awesome power.. just hold your hand inside a
kick drum

I think you have to search as different types of epilepsy
(Photosensitive, etc.). That's what I just did.

Mt. Saint Michel (or another of the Drukqs drill tunes) has
a very fast clicky bit at the end of it. It sounds really
weird on headphones. I remember feeling a little weird when
I listened to that bit pretty loud on headphones.

This keeps on getting stranger and stranger...

But this was shitloads. Probably even louder than standing
next to a PA. It was literally like being punched in the
chest.

yeah, but that's what sound is

have you seen a speaker resonating at low low low hz? it's
just a membrane moving air forwards... I'd record video of
mine doing.. whatever, it's less than one motion per second
as far as I can tell, but it doesn't produce neither sound
nor pressure, as that is equivalent to just moving your hand
forwards and backwards.

Yeah, I know. It was really weird though, cos it was audible
at the same time as you could feel each kinda hit.

odd

it's probably because of the overtones. all sound but pure
sine waves has.. at least 18 overtones following the natural
scale.

meaning even the lowest bass can appear audible while
it really just is so that you feel the bass and
hear the overtones.

there.
