Well, I find good repetition is usually achieved with loops
that aren't too busy. Listen to plastikman consumed, and you
will hear a good example. The quietest songs on that album
are the ones that stay fresh the longest.

aphex twin masters this with selected ambient works

I'm sorry I will stay out of this.
I got into a fight with the DJ of my old Industrial band
because he wanted the beats to go" dush dush dush dush dush
dsh dsh dsh dun dun dun dsh dsh dsh dun dunna
dush dush dush dush dush dush dush" no form of repetition in
my books is that good.
not my tastes so instead of being a complete cunt I will
leave this thread. :)

usually bits/themes are repeated, altered, repeated in
earlier forms with new bits etc throughout tasty trackos
arrangement of repeated microthemes to achieve a macrotheme
is a skill a lot of loop heads (including myself) need to
pay more attention to/work on

Moorish art in Spain like at the Alhambra is intensely
repetitive but never identical. There are rooms with
decorative patterns where you try to find two decorative
elements the same and you can't - they're all deliberately
different, but similar enough that it forms a harmonious
whole. It depends how much attention you're paying.

There is a very good article on pitchfork about repetition.

Basically, GAS, William Basinksi, Robert Hood - Minus, and
some tracks from SAW2 have the sustained loop thing pretty
much down. It is incredibly difficult to make loop-based
repetitive music, since the brain just natually needs to be
kept busy. But when it does work, its an awesome experience.

repetition? oh yes - "repetition is a form of change" said
Brian Eno on his "Oblique strategies" cards and whatever
taht means I'm all for it. For a few years now I have
discovered berlin minimal techno (Basic channel, maurizio
and most recently Vainqueur) and I really love the
meditational endlessly repetitive music... (and a good
"song" length is about 15-20 mins!)

yeah definitely, i mean a good repetition can have you
aching for much more of it, when you could listen to it for
at least 20 minutes....
