How do you feel about love? Are you a hopeless romantic who believes in a kind of soul-mate, one person to spend the rest of your life with, or are you one of those who feel (love) life is a series of relationships with different people?

The idea of a soulmate is somebody with whom you totally click, and will never irritate and vice-versa. It's an improbability if not an impossibility.
It is true that one will click with person x more than with person y, but there'll be nobody on earth who satisfies the delusional idea of the "soulmate". The reason being, we're all human.
To believe in the soulmate is to not believe in the age old adage that goes, "Nobody's perfect."

Now guys, let there be no hate in this love thread. Redrum, I explicitly added "a kind of" soulmate, because we all know this idea only comes forth in movies. Real life cases of perfect love are not unheard of, though. Don't condemn the idea so easily.

i think you don't have to agree on everything, nobody'd want a soulmate like that because that would be a lame relationship
i think it means you just feel the same way about certain deep stuff to an extent that it feels special and more than a ordinairy relationship
but it's just something you have to believe in

well it carries with it the idea of a prolonged, sustained, undying love.
If one were to believe your point of view on the meaning of the soulmate, then sure, yeah, there are probably hundreds if not thousands of soul mates for each one of us. Kinda defeats the romantic purpose and idea of the soul mate, doesn't it?

Good point. Isn't the whole idea of a soulmate, that they are your one and only and that there's only one mr/miss right, for each person. That person is your soulmate, not just somebody that has the same views as you.

the idea i have of a soulmate isn't connected to a romantic relationship perse. it's just love+soulmate is better than just love
i'm rational too in not believing there's only one perfect love for all of us, well and not even in one soulmate but that does go against the definition i think

i think we have different perception on what you meant by soul mate that's all. it appears that appart from redrum and svalx we have a more rational view on what a soul mate is :)
big pretty much said it all already, i pretty much agree with all of that. to me a soul mate is when you find someone who's compatible, who understand you, someone you bond with in a deeper level. and vice versa. and it isn't just one human..could be 2 out of 10 or could be 8 out of 10.

I'd still argue that that's not the common perception of what a soul mate is.
If what you're saying were the case, then please explain why the sentence "I have found my soul mate", indicating a singular existential entity, is used in literature, film, etc, instead of "I have found one of my soul mates"

That's not what is implied. What's implied is that there is only one, and that they cannot be let get away, for if they're lost, they're lost forever and such a love can never be found again.

From that page:
Classical - Greek mythology - Originally humans were combined of 4 arms, 4 legs, and a single head made of 2 faces, but Zeus feared their power and split them all in half, condemning them to spending their lives searching for the other half to complete them. This theory was presented as a half-serious story by Aristophanes in Plato's Symposium, after all the participants at the Symposium ("drinking party") were charged to philosophize on the topic of love.
So yeah, I go by the classical definition.. And I'd never have classed the classics as "crap".
Also, the type of love we're talking about here is romantic love, so I don't know what you're on about. When I mentioned literature and film, i wasn't exactly going for pulp fiction and hollywood blockbusters/romantic comedies.
We'll agree to disagree on the semantics of the term "soul mate" shall we? One thing I won't agree to, however, is using the terms "twin flame" or "twin soul", as suggested by that wikipedia page, since it seems a bit too new age for my liking..
