discussed here before i think
ive had a cheap r32 hoya filter for like a year or two now i
just never used it a lot

it blocks / filters all light range except IR (and a touch
of red at the far end of the spectrum) = very little light
coming in hitting the sensor = need long exposure
(15-20seconds) = needs to be on tripod = hassel for taking
shots

plus theyget real noisey

i need to do that conversion bad

Obviously taffmonster will now go out and buy one for his
Japan thing and do the conversion and then try to sell it
for half what he paid so he can afford to go on his Japan
thing.

ecnad, as far as im aware, the 1d/1ds have very strong IR
filters, and I believe it's extremely difficult to product
IR photos with a filter.

offline elusive from detroit (United States) on 2006-08-20 16:24 [#01957264]

IR filters before the sensor that is

so using an IR filter on your lens would let even less light
(IR) in than a pro-sumer canon dslr.

Ah, I see (I have no idea really) :)

I can't be arsed with photographs. I was going to go down
to the docks one night to take pictures and ended up at a
pub instead.

bogala, just with a lens-filter (IR filter) that blocks out
all light except IR (and a touch on the red end of the
spectrum).

since very little light is not hitting the sensor, you have
to have the shutter open a long time = induced noise, blurry
trees (if the wind is bad) etc,, 15-20second shutter times

which means you also have to have it setup on a tripod

Our member, Paco got me intrested in starting to make
"curve" sets for Photoshop when he sent me the "X-Pro" set
he and a fellow photographer did. I played around and
switched settings and balances to make one for infrared.
It's neat how some computer program can effectively emulate
a film/processing/or shot style.

so, so now I'm on my parents. I'll send it as soon as I get
the chance though.

Elusive, hunt down some really cheap digital cameras (with a
filter thread) and try that with your R72. You can use step
up rings to fit the filter to a smaller thread. I've
noticed, the cheaper the camera, the more sensitive it is
for IR. My phone gives really short times, while both the
EOS 300D and 5D need at least 30s @
f/11.

Really nice photos! Great editing too, I know how boring
they look straight out of the camera.

but u have to use an ir sensitive film aren't you?

or does the filter change the waves' wavelength?

offline bogala from NYC (United States) on 2006-08-21 18:04 [#01957713]

long shutter times really make wonderful shots. I took a
photo course and the teacher would set really dim lighting
in a room and leave the shutter open all night long. Or
street lamp scenes at night stuff like that. And the results
were incredible. Textures like you wouldn't believe.

offline elusive from detroit (United States) on 2006-08-21 18:21 [#01957724]

no, it's a digital sensor/camera
using an IR filter over the lens (to block all light except
IR from hitting the sensor).

offline yann_g from now on 2006-08-21 19:56 [#01957738]
Points: 3772 Status: Lurker

oh ok so it's set up to receive ir! never thought of that.
like the silver process more tho :) but your pics render
quite well. and there is offset in the focus i guess...

offline elusive from detroit (United States) on 2006-08-21 20:01 [#01957739]
Points: 18368 Status: Lurker | Show recordbag

no, no focus issues
just more induced noise with the longer shutter
(15-20second shutter speed) which also results in some
blurry shots (tree branches blowing in the wind) due to the
long suhtter time.

will probably pickup a p&s cam to do the IR mod tho.

real time IR is what i want.
white trees, black sky = lush
