I fitted a VDO-Dayton 1604 head-unit to my Subaru last week. First time in 5 years I've been able to listen to CD's and first time I've been able to play MP3's. Next up is a pair of 4-inch VDO co-axial speakers for the doors (don't want to go to the bother of custom building mounts for larger speakers). Fitting a Kenwood HU into my wifes' car this week.
Listened to Draft 7.30 on the way to work this morning :)
What are you listening to music on in your automobile?

I just bought myself a a new used car, a Peugeot Partner 1,9 D and it came with a totally sufficient Pioneer cd player. The speakers are crap though... but they will do, for now. I listened to Junior Boys "Last Exit" on my way to work today. Fabulous record!

Sound doesn't actually come out of the speakers in the back of our car so I always hate sitting in the back.

You should adjust the "FAD" on the player to get sound in the back

I've not got a car at the moment, but all the hire cars I have for work have CD players and speakers that are louder than I want/need. My motorbike's "soundsystem" is a 128mb mp3 player that needs the volume turned to full in order to hear it over the engine/wind noise. I don't use it very often as it absolutely eats the AAA batteries it takes (less than 2 hours of play time!). Once I've got a bit more spare cash and am using the bike more for work, I'll invest in a bigger mp3 player with more battery life/capacity and some in ear headphones that act as earplugs (designed for musicians on stage, but a Sennheiser engineer I emailed said it'd be fine on a bike).

Why do you need a soundsystem in your car?

used to have a clarion mp3 cd player, with Sony Xplode speakers in the front, and some cheap Pioneers in the back. Head unit got stolen last year, been using the factory tape deck ever since.

have a kenwood system in mine; 6x4's in the back and 3-way 6's in the front (i think?), with a kenwood mp3/cd unit i bought some years ago (and has survived several vehicles).
i *always* get funny looks playing autechre in my car in this city; it's like they can't work out whether my car is broken or something. interstate people never seem to give a shit.

If I listen to loud music in the car I tend to get a bit reckless. Woooah.

i used to do that ill never do it again for a few reasons
i had just a single 12 in a large (3.3ft^3 ported box, at one time it was a 7ft^3 box lol) tuned around 33hz
did close to 150dB at around 55hz the lower tuned box did 135+ at like 27Hz
lots of flex
but
1) never doing that again because all the panels in my then-new car shook like crazy
now i got tons of creaks and sounds from the panels which annoy the piss out of me
2) lung collapse/spontaneous pneumothoraxes,,, loud bass / pressure flux isn't good for me

SO, just fitted a pair of Kenwood 6" co-axials into the doors........ I thought I could only fit 4" speakers, but when I pulled the trim off the factory speakers were 6".... quick trip back to the car audio place and I had swapped the VDO units over for the Kenwoods. Piece of piss to fit them and much better sound than before. much better bass response, and I can drive them much harder without any distortion. Niiiiiiiiiiice.
