yup, a small town in east texas. i've been playing on
saturdays for almost 2 years. it's the only gay club within
an 80 mile radius.

so, my question is...

what do you think i should play? what would your impression
of the crowd and the music be, just based on the little you
might know about the area?

cause i'm still amazed at the amount of ignorance and bad
taste.

stuff.

cowboys + techno = a bunch of confused, angry cowboys

Haha, get a record with steel guitar, and something of the
area, then match the bpm to a beat record, scratch it like a
mosquito bite, make some countrybreaks.

here's what it's really like...

the club is about 90% gay men, 2% lesbian, and about 8%
women who hang out with gay men to look cool cause they are
too fat to have any straight guys around them.

of the gay men, about 75% are black. some of them look tough
and street like the houston rappers they emulate. some of
them are well-groomed pretty boys.

then there are the older, white guys.

not a single cowboy in sight. not even a cowboy hat has
passed through those doors in 2 years.

and there is a biker bar right next door.

the music i play is all over the place. the music they dance
to is only hip hop or top 40 pop stuff. ONLY!

they don't dance to anything else.

I don't know what to say then. Get a few hard-drives of
popular good stuff, and take requests?

that's what i do. i keep a notebook at the booth, and for
the last 3 hours, i let another dj take over and play the
requested shit.

I would try to find some cool disco and club trax from the
70's and early 80's... most gay people love that...
Check out this collection of classics by Jeff Mills!

And then there is this compilation of Arthur Russell's club music.. He was gay too!

Carl Craig has collected some of his favorite "Funk" tracks
on this compilation.

If I were to play a gay club I would definitely bring those
three discs along.. Try it and good luck!
