hello all

my panasonic sl-ct710 cd player recently broke, which makes
me sad because i loved it dearly. i am looking to invest in
another cd/mp3 player, am not willing to spend more than
£100, and don't care about the headphones (i have good ones
already).

any suggestions?

the new zen is fucking gorgeous. my housemate just got one.
30gb, and the most beautiful colour screen you've ever seen.

i want to sell my ipod now and get one instead. they're
gorgeous.

All i want it for is music, and i'd like to still play cds
(as well as mp3 cds). old school.

can anybody recommend a high quality cd/mp3 player?

i have a creative zen nano plus (1gb). it's ultra small
(like the same size as a lighter) and the sound quality is
excellent. it only cost me about £80 too, so it's great
value for money.

get a really really nice phone right now...

seriously, it may not hold as much as you want to in terms
of music, but man... does it do more than just play MP3..s

its part of the new way, when you the big big money.

I used to use this Philips Expanium (pretty sure thats not a
word) thing that plays 3" CDs with mp3s on it, you get about
3-4 albums on a cd but you can carry a fuck load because
they are little. It lasted me about 3 years and it didnt
break or anything I just wanted an iPod. LAZY_TITLE

this is my input on this topic

I got something for about $50 that my wife bought that plays
MP3s and that's all I can ask for really. I can't remember
what its called, but for argument's sake let's call it the
Mega VRTL DJ 3,000,000

thanks everyone for your comments.

i prefer cds for various reasons. most importantly sound
quality. and because it forces you to listen to an album as
intended rather than surf aimlessly through playlists. etc
etc

so no suggestions for good cd/mp3 players then?

get something that can run rockbox; i've got an iaudio x5l
which i'm extremely happy with which does.

rockbox is awesome. if you're a sound quality nut, it'll
even do flac.

I follow the audio player scene a little, and no companies
really care about CD players (including mp3-cd) much these
days; if anything they have a low cost market target.
Anyway, you won't be seeing much quality or features there.

I think your reservations with digital audio players are
silly and you can get what you want from a more modern
device. This seems to be the current favorite. ipods are shit of course.

few extra notes.

rockbox can be sweet but you have to give a shit to mess
with it, of course.

regarding audio quality, there isn't much attention on the
internet to systematically finding the best sounding player,
mostly you just see gadget horniness / feature craze. Some
are very nice though, for instance my most recent toy sounds
better than my g/f's nano, which sounds better than my old
toy..

also cell phones are becoming more and more capable audio
players and hopefully in a few years not many people will
have two separate devices in their pockets.

hell, the kids already seem to have forgotten what a
portable discman is. i wish you luck with finding one. try
looking in the garbage.

I hate how cell phones are packed with crap features while
voice quality and digital coverage stagnate, however most
people aren't really discriminating with regard to their
gadgets and merging their audio player and phone would make
life a lot easier.

That's in general. Personally, I would love a very small,
minimal cell phone with a monochrome screen, no calendar /
configurable ring tones / etc., but ogg and mp3 playback.I
hate carrying two things

I've got an old Sony D-EJ985 discman that hasn't skipped a
beat in 5 years, it quality. Most places don't stock decent
discmans anymore, but if you can find one, I'd go with Sony

On a side note, I had an ipod (my friend found it on the
back of a truck...) but it died in the arse after a year and
a half. Now I have a Sony NWA3000 Mp3 player, which is far
superior.

Yes admittedly some of the new mp3 players are pretty sweet,
but they're too expensive and their battery lives aren't
great.

I've just ordered one of these bad boys:

Philips EXP7361 MP3 CD player

At £30 it's about five times cheaper than most mp3 players,
it does everything I want it to do, it has a >100hr battery
life, and it's way less nickable than a swanky mp3 player.

same day and it fucked up within 2 months. so dont get one
of those.
