Travel Guides, Lonely Planet or Rough Guide?

Any of you travelers out there use travel guides? I'm
looking for a good guide for moving to Tokyo but i dont want
one fo these boring tourist books that tells you all the
expensive resturaunts you can't afford and skips the sleazy
night life and more underound happenings!

I've seen some lonely planet ones and they are cool but not
all that concise, the rough guide books look good. I just
wondered if anyone actually reads travel guides and if there
is travellers bible so to speak!

I forgot to mention, I've no interest in Japanese food etc,
I'm more keen to find cool music venues and underground
bars!

hehe yeah everyone raves on about shinjuku, even my fucking
japanese lessons "Shinjuku dori wa doko desu ka?" lol. I
will no doubt ask my fellow work mates some of the mor
insider hang outs i just fancied a guide to read before i
arrive and for initial adventures! It's a shame they focus
on central Tokyo because im moving to Toba city (Tokyo's
urban sprawl) although Tokyo is so close i see no reaosn not
to simply hang out there!

I meant Tokyu Hands, the shop in Shinjuku. It's got
everything from Architects models to Scarves in every colour
to suitcases in every style and colour to HardGay fancy
dress costumes to knives to umbrellas etc. etc. It's
amazing!!

Hey man hows your trip coming along? When will you be in
TK?

I am in Laos at the moment, I have been thinking about going
to Jap for a few days in a month or so, if I can by any
chance get some great flight deals, etc. Its probably not
going to happen though I'll keep you updated it would be
cool to meet in Tokyo of all the places on earth.

But on topic, yeah over here, travel guides are pretty much
THE LAW it seems. Lonely Planet outnumbers Rough Guide about
15 - 1 I would say, literally. This is in South East Asia,
so you need one really, its not like there's a yellow pages
for rural Laos. Some people are militantly anti-LP, as so
many backpackers now don't explore anywhere outside of the
restaurants/guesthouses/whatever recommended. And I think
most people feel the same, but that doesn't mean they can't
be really essential though, if for nothing else than for the
maps of each location, prices/modes of transport, locations
of post offices/watever, tel numbers...

I would advise you to get one as up to date as humanly
possible. The latest Laos LP everyone's got is Jan '05, and
its so inaccurate now. And also, don't assume the critics
know anything at all - half the places they recommend are
shitholes, etc, or non-existant, as they date so fast. Don't
make the mistake of using the book like an actual itinerary
planner - maybe when you start, then use it more for
reference as you find your feet. I've found that spoken
recommendations for food/sleep/drink/towns are so much more
useful than anything in the guidebooks.

The main LP everyone has over here is 'South East Asia - On
a Shoestring' (yeah this is SEAsia's travellers' bible,
unofficially: the 'Yellow Bible') which obviously has zero
expensive places recommended. Now I'm not sure if there's an
equivalent that includes Japan but I'm sure that would be
cool. So yeah I would say get an LP or RG, its a good base,
then maybe get somehting a bit more specific as to the kinda
scene you're interested in.

Too much writing, keep in tou

hhehee sounds like your having a good time man. I have the
lonely Planet Japan book but everyone seems to make a
specific guide just for Tokyo as its so big and so different
from the rest of Japan. Theres new LP for tokyo out August
31st unfortunatly I fly August 28th :( so i'll have to get
last years. I already bought a AAA city guide because of the
road map,I figured I'd get one over here where it has
Japanese and English road signs :D it's gonna be a hell of a
city to explore, but at least i have a whole year to explore
it :D
