toe tac tic: crunch

otto von schirach: some tracks own idm. others are funny and
weird but not quite as good.

best richard devine track i've heard is the one on the
compilation, like a 10 minute track or so. I forget what the
compilation is called but i think it's the first track.

ok how about this. you know the set of reals is strictly
larger than the set of integers. how? here's the proof, due
to cantor (I'm paraphrasing it)

if they have the same size, use the integers to enumerate
the reals between zero and one, exclusive (this is bijective
with the full real line trivially, just use inverse
tangent). now consider the real number consisting of all the
diagonal entries. that is, it's first digit is the first
digit of the first number, the 2nd digit is the 2nd digit of
the 2nd number, etc. call that number x.

now consider another real number which has a five anywhere x
has something other than five, and a four where x has a
five. call this number y.

y cannot be in our list of numbers. why? because, since x
spans the whole list, it must have the same jth digit as x
for some integer j. but that would mean some digit would
have both a five and a non-five!!

contradiction, and hence, the reals are strictly greater
than the integers.

nice, eh?

that's his second proof. it's traditionally done in decimal
expansion how I said it, though binary makes it leaner.

I was paraphrasing but it's roughly the usual presentation.

I don't get it. Trying to prove there is a greater quantity
of decimal pointed numbers than whole numbers? 'self
evident' I probably don't know what I'm writing about.
I don't have impuktor- it might not be on cd yet but will be
I think.
