As the blood boiled in the veins on his forehead, I could feel the atmosphere in the room darken. Father's hands clenched the armrests of his easy chair like a hawk grasping it's kill. |

It was late, too late for my father's liking. As I came in, I knew I had done wrong. Carefully, I eased open the front door. I held my breath as it gave a slight creak. Tip-toeing I landed softly on the welcome rug. Welcome was not the word to describe what would happen very shortly. The lights were on. i knew someone was awake. My father. I tried to be as sneaky as possible, but through my quietness I could still hear a heavy breathing from the living room. "Son?", my fathers voice spoke softly, hiding his true rage. "Come in here", he said. With my head hung low, I entered the room. Without warning, as I rturned the corner, a mighty blow struck me to my knees. A blinding pain consumed me as my eyes began to water and a mixture of tear and blood overcame me. "Dad!" I screamed. "I'm sorry! I won't do it again, I promise!" My cries and pleas did nothing to ease the situation. Sharp striking fists continued to rain down across my half covered skull and back. The damage wasn't preventable. Suddenly, the downpour of angry fists ceased. "It's over." father said gently. "Now just go to your room and think about the mistake you've made." Without responding verbally, I slowly stood up, wincing from the pain generated by my pounding head. Before I could possibly react, a swift uppercut connected with my exposed midsection, striking me with enough brute force to knock me up to the ceiling, cracking paint which dusted my shattered body as I returned to the ground. |
