do you think children are children longer because we pamper
them too much? I mean.. even an adult would behave like a
child if he was introduced into the world and everyone
talked to him all "woogy woogy woo! where's mommy?! where's
mommy?! THERE'S MOMMY haa haa haaaaha woo!"

What if we, from the start, told kids about politics and
science and set them up so they could see the news, etc.. of
course, they wouldn't understand the language at first, but
even that could be intensified. what do you think?

How desireable this would be I don't know.. of course, if it
worked, we could more or less have more mature kids sooner,
but we could also end up with people without the ability to
be critical as a result of having explicitly been
told about things they are to believe before they
have the chance to explore and figure out stuff on their
own.. they could also, as a result of never having done
this, become quite unadventurous which means human "motion"
(as in progress, but not linear towards one single goal)
could grind to a halt.

part of the reason for this question is that I don't really
know how to handle kids as kids.. I don't seem to be able to
do that "woogy woogy woo!!" stuff nor do I think any of them
are cute, and what I mostly end up doing is talking to them
as if they were adults and most of the time it seems like
they follow what I'm saying and even enjoy the
conversations.. on my side it gets a bit boring, but I
belive that to be more of a result of them not having had
the experience and background I do meaning they don't know
as much about the subjects we're discussing as I do leaving
them with little to nothing to say.

This book is very easy to read, unlike most of his other
texts, and deals with the way children should be educated. I
think it should answer a lot of your questions.

I think there's alot of truth in what you're saying. I
think it stems from necessity. In Roman times they had to
grow up fast, get married around 12 yo and start popping out
new babies since the life spans were shorter, etc, so it's
clearly relative. We definitely have collective postponed
adolescence, but it's not really a bad thing. I tend to
dislike it when young kids act too grown up.. they have
their whole lives for that and it denies them their inherent
carefree, youthful joy. Similarly, I can't stand to see
adults acting like children, which is more often the case.

read enough from him.. I'll probably read it in the future
some time anyway, though, as I study philosophy and he's one
of the "greats."

I think making baby noises with children, as you mentioned
in your topic, is very important.. But prolonging its use
is, in my opinion, both selfish and stupid. It retards the
child's development.

I think you shouldn't try to talk to children about
politics, music, sport, etc, as such, but instead, behave
normally around them. Then, when they are inquisitive about
what you're talking about, entertain their questions and
explain things in simple language, but without dumbing down
the facts to an extraordinarily low level.

That's my 2 cents.

yeah, but what if your (and quite a few other peoples)
attitude that children acting grown up is annoying is
hindering their development in that people almost scold
children for acting grown up (I don't remember the english
word, but I know there is one and we have "veslevoksen" and
neither word is a positive one.. why?).

i agree on some vision of your words.
we can learn more of children that they can learn about us.

mayority of adults are sacry childrens.

talk with a children like if this is is silly-telling woo
wooo things...telling:come on eat your dinner or the drunken
mastah will come and eat You!!!!...---well this way is not
working, cos this makes the fear and commodity grow in the
children uh?

i like have fun with kids, like show the world as it
is,making games and jokes, every word and movement is
important with childrens...and every children is a diferent
one.

got to relax a let them be,and let them make poopoo!!!
huhu!!!

yeah..i think childs are telepathic and many other
powers..that comes off with fear and other bad habits.

can i stop wrting/talking yet?..is ok..i end now.hi

Anyway I think that speaking to children like "woogy woogy
woo! where's mommy?! where's mommy?! THERE'S MOMMY haa haa
haaaaha woo!" is stupid. Why not talking to them kindly but
normally ? people who act "woohy woogy" just wanna catch the
kid's attention, which is bad because it leads babies to
think they are superior, so they start crying and act like
they were kings.

yeah, that would be a good thing I think, and that's what I
do, but the thing is that when I act normal I always end up
talking about politics or something and sometimes you get
into areas where you think "oh, maybe his parents doesn't
want him to know about this yet or something..?" like with
murder or war and shit like that... kids mostly seem to
think war machines are great fun, but I believe that is
because they don't know what they can do in terms of damage,
but rather what their specs are if you know what I mean..
those stealth bomber airplanes are probably awesomely cool
if you're into that kind of thing, but what they do isn't...

before a certain age i just wasnt interested in for instance
politics or history. then interest popped up. judging from
that, i doubt that if you arent genuinely interesed in
something that interest can be "forced upon you" from the
outside. children are taught history from 5th grade on. it
doesnt make many of them interested in it.

At first I wasn't able to picture a child being scolded for
that but I can actually see what you mean, i.e. kids being
scoffed at if they try to enter 'adult' conversations. I
think you're right.. it's damaging if kids feel they are
lesser people for trying to speak their mind and end up
getting patronizing responses from adults. Conversely, I
don't think that kids should necessarily be force-fed
politics or what have you because that's robbing them of
their childhood. No amount of human 'motion' or progress is
worth that, if you ask me.

Interesting point you've made.. it took me a little while to
figure out what you meant in the 'almost scolding' sentence.

even if kids today don't necessarily know about good and
bad, I think that also would be a result of us not telling
them about it or even allowing them to discover it; we
shield our kids from stuff like that for as long as possible
for some reason...

yeah, but wouldn't you say the interest came with your
maturing? I'm just saying maybe we could allow our kids to
mature faster instead of pampering and shielding them for so
long...

yeah, I didn't mean the scolding part too literally... and
yeah, I wasn't really talking about force-feeding it to
them, but rather just.. instead of just discussing.. what
one discusses with kids.. toys or santa claus or stuff like
that, one could just treat the kids like adults and when
initiating conversation one could do it like one would with
an adult on the subjects of an adult.

Yes, treating them as equals, or at the very least meeting
them where they are.

Point well made, I agree with you.

this might've already been addressed -- i don't have time to
read the rest of the thread that's appeared since i've been
away working -- but how the child should be raised is up to
the parents. It's easy to talk about "normal", "happy"
things with other people's kids.

If you had kids and they started getting into guns, war
machines, etc, since they're cool, simple pose the question
to the child of the harm they do. That's what my parents did
to me and I see nothing wrong with it. It encourages the
growth, as opposed to the imposition, of a moral framework
on the part of the child, and also encourages contemplative
thought on the ills of the world and the beauty and value of
life.

I'm not in any way suggesting that the government should
somehow take charge of the children or anything like that,
I'm just saying that maybe if parents didn't treat their
kids like kids, they wouldn't be kids as long as they
currently are! what is normal at any given time is not
always what is the best.

cof..cof....then..if jumps from childs to kids, then i agree
doctor
..but if talk about childrens 0-3/4years then brain and mind
are not grow the size and take care about time/espace and of
course,lenguage.-it represets the born of the
mind=thinkings=fun-not fun=good/bad=prejudices.

here is better to we learn about human behaviour and when
child goes to kid..then the ducation is the question uh?
yeah...the education...

maybe this has nothing to do with this topic, but it got me
thinking:

this reminds of something i've been talking about with my
friends. we were recalling in our life the moment when you
discovered that life wasn't all play - the bubble of your
personal life popped into a new world. a world filled with
deception, inequality and injustice.

some of us remembered the moment - others thought we were
crazy. its not the loss of innocence per se, but the
realization that life might be filled with more than what we
were counting on.

What is it with people thinking childhood is some sort of
lost eden?
You see all kinds of terrible things on the news, in
fiction, bullying at school, unfair teachers...
You might not get all the details, but you understand, at
least in a basic way, that life isn't all fun quite early
on, as far as I can remember.
