BBC Radio Five Live asked for help from a deaf lip reader, Jessica Rees, who read the words phonetically to an Italian translator. She deciphered the insult as being "you're the son of a terrorist whore" - a translation also carried by many national newspapers in Britain on Tuesday. This reminded me of something my housemate Mattias said.. That not only are the italians corrupt, dirty footballers, but they're racist too. There's huge immigration into Italy from Africa, and yet, how many black people are there on the Italian team? None whatsoever. France's immigrant contingent on their team is the only reason, said Mattias, that they're in any way successful in football. Add to this Tridenti's ignorant remarks and beliefs about muslims and immigrants, a little personal factor if you will, and the picture becomes even darker. Why is there such racism in Italy? |

I thought it was necessary for a person to have a front view of the person whose lips are to be read for them to be able to read it.. I've only seen side views of it, and I don't think there are any head-on views... |

what do you mean, it's impossible to make out the movements of the lips? or that he didn't say so many words? it's certainly possible to decypher what he's saying from such a "distance".. zoom.. then try your best to work out the phonemes.. once you work out even a couple, there are only a couple of possibilities for each word that he's saying, once the phonetic rules of italian are taken into account. then bring in the syntactic rules of italian and put a bit of pragmatics to work, and the possibilities are restricted even further, and you've got your "bingo!" moment. |

yeah, maybe Materazzi is racist, but then why not call this thread "Racist Materazzi" (btw, it hasn't been confirmed what he said, so jumping to the conclusion that it was racist is a bit unfair. we won't know until one of them (or both) come out and say what was said. we just assume it had to be racist because "what else could provoke such a reaction?" well, probably lots of insults, not racially motivated) but besides all that, questioning a country as a whole, is bullshit, based on 2 people. |
