A Scanner Darkly- movie

I just got back from seeing it.

I loved it.

I think the most important thing, is that when the movie
ended, I felt exactly like I did, when I read the last page
of the book... which means the movie succeded, imo.

The movie was pretty close and faithful to the book. Its
been like 2 years since I read it, so its not fresh on my
mind, to make different comparisons, but I don't think it
really deviated.

There were perhaps a few spots of dialoge that weren't
convincing (keanu mostly). But it certainly didn't ruin the
film.

I think the rotoscoping effect worked perfectly for the
film. It gave it that dream like quality that I had when
reading the book. I knew as soon as I heard linklater was
doing the film, and was using the effect, that this was THE
movie to use it on, and it worked.

The music was cool too. Nothing fancy, but cool. A few
(unreleased?) radiohead songs on there (I think I counted 4
in the credits... one of which is a fourtet remix).

So yeah, overall, I really liked it. I'd be interested to
hear what other people have to say, when/if they see it.

I've been waiting for this for years. A Scanner Darkly is my
favorite book. Can't wait for it to hit the Paris cinemas.

1: that's not rotoscoping. rotoscoping is a manual
process.

2: I refuse to even watch this movie until someone makes it
into a real movie without the worst crap ass silly fuck your
ass off effects ever.

It is a very annoying effect. Does it mean anything, other
than hey-we-made-it-look-kind-of-like-an-animated-
feature,-way-cool
?

rotoscoping is when you draw animations by first shooting
something on film and then you project this film onto a
screen with a cell where an animator draws on it.. this
movie used a program where you draw certain frames and then
you let the program fill in the in-betweens.

does it really matter if its 'real' rotoscoping or not? i
kind of like the effect but i also dont really see the point
of it

it wouldn't matter if the computerized one could actually do
what the manual one can, and maybe it can, but I bet that'd
require someone to do each frame (in other words, it'd kind
of be manual again) and not only the keyframes leaving the
program to fill in the blanks.

I don't know whether a purely manual product would be
better-looking or not (which I doubt), but it's not like
they just put a computer on the job and then sat back and
watched!

According to them, "for each one minute of animation, 500
hours of work was necessary". Like any painstaking
animation, that is.

I really enjoyed it in Waking Life (which couldn't have been
made without it), and I can see why this particular plot,
and PKD himself, would require a surreal and dream-like
touch to it.

Sorry to so deeply offend you.

forward to seeing it. It was a terrific book.

Thanks for pointing this out a long time ago. I remember you
made a thread about it and since i saw the trailor i was
sucked in. I love how rotoscoping was used in waking life
(fav+ movie) and i thought that it looked ace.

I didnt even know it was out already. This is truly good
news. For some reason i thought i had to wait until next
year.

Thanks for the heads up :)

NYC, LA etc... don't know the whole list, but its not many.
I think the nationwide release is on the 28th

Not trolling, but I'd just like to know if there's a deeper
meaning to it, because it looks a little gimmicky to me. And
more videogamey than dream-like.

I think in a way it is a gimmick, but if it works in the
context of the film then why not use it - Philip K Dick's
novels are almost uniformly about one's sense of reality,
and what is authentic or inauthentic about reality and the
self - so this kind of not quite animation, not quite live
action approach seems like a good match.
